CURWENSVILLE – West Branch’s Makena Moore tossed a no-hitter against the Curwensville softball team on Thursday. The Warrior junior turned in a gem from the circle for the 8-0 victory.
Moore struck out 17 Tide batters and walked just one batter in the contest. However, it was discovered that Curwensville committed a substitution error that erased the lone baserunner on the afternoon, resulting in a Perfect Game.
Sophomore Caitlyn Irwin filled the circle for Curwensville in her first start of the season and pitched well before the Warrior bats came alive in the sixth inning. Irwin struck out one hitter and walked just one while giving up 13 hits.
“I thought Caitlyn did the job in the circle tonight,” said Curwensville Coach Allen Leigey. “She kept their batters off balance early, and the defense made some tough plays to limit the baserunners.”
West Branch pushed the first run across in the first inning. With two outs, Moore was hit by a pitch. Greysyn Gable followed with a single to right, and Moore scampered home on an error as the relay was mishandled.
In the second inning Mallory Graham led off with a double and two outs later was able to score on a Mackenzie Mactavish single for the 2-0 lead.
Four Warrior runs crossed the plate in the sixth inning using singles from Layla Thompson and Carsyn Wesesky, a homerun from Mactavish and a double from Gable.
The final two runs scored in the top of the seventh as Graham and Thompson opened with singles. The first out put runners on the corners and an error on a set steal play allowed the first run. The final run was the gift of a second error in the inning as only four of the eight runs scored were earned.
The Lady Tide (12-4) will try to bounce back on Saturday as Redbank Valley invades Coach Andy Evanko Stadium for a 3:00 start.
