HYDE — On Thursday night the Clearfield Bison and Philipsburg-Osceola Mountie wrestling teams held their 5th Annual Takedown Cancer Match. The previous four years raised approximately $55,000 for the Emily Whitehead Foundation.
This year’s event raised approximately $8,000 for the Bob Perks Fund. Based out of State College, Perks provides funds to cancer patients for basic needs in Centre, Clearfield, Blair, and Huntingdon counties.
The first four Takedown Cancer matches were split 2-2, with Clearfield winning the first two and Philipsburg-Osceola winning the last two. This year the Bison managed to avenge last years’ 53-19 thrashing with a 35-32 win over the Mounties.
The Mounties actually won six of the 10 contested bouts, but were unable to overcome the three forfeits they handed to the Bison.
The dual started at 126 pounds where Bison Nolan Barr (19-9) bumped up from 120 and major decisioned Nick Bryan (6-12) 11-2 to give the hosts a 4-0 lead, a lead which they would never relinquish. Barr outscored Bryan 7-2 in the second period to blow open a 2-0 first period lead.
At 132 Clearfield’s Justin Hand (6-7) received a forfeit, the 10-0 Bison lead turned out to be the widest margin they would have until the 182 pound match.
Mountie Chase Chapman (18-7) dominated Clearfield’s Wyatt Reoda (1-1) at 138, building up an 11-3 first period before pinning Reoda 34 seconds in to the second period.
Tied 4-4 going in to the final period at 145 pounds, Mountie Austin Foster (12-4) scored a decisive third period takedown to edge Luke Freeland (17-10) and bring P-O to within one, 10-9.
At 152 Bison Karson Kline (20-10) scored three third period points on an escape and a takedown to pick up a 9-1 major decision over Dominic Shaw (3-6), giving the Bison a 14-9 lead.
Once again the Mounties answered back with a win, this time in the feature bout of the night. At 160 P-O’s Hunter Weistosh (21-4) squared off with Clearfield’s Mark McGonigal (22-5). McGonigal scored the opening takedown, but Weitosh reversed to even the bout at two apiece after the first period. McGonigal chose neutral to start the second, but gave up a takedown to go down 4-2. The two accomplished wrestlers traded reversals to set the score at 6-4 Weistosh heading to the final period. Weistosh chose down and escaped to a 7-4 lead. Another Weistosh takedown pretty much sealed the deal, the last point being a stall point for McGonigal to set the final at 9-5 and close the team score to 14-12 Clearfield.
Hayden Kavolick (20-10) wouldn’t let the Mounties take the lead as he broke open a tight 4-2 match with Alex Dunkelberger (9-8) with two takedowns in the decisive third period to win 8-5 and widen the team score to 17-12.
A forfeit to Brett Zattoni (17-13) at 182 gave the Bison an 11 point lead, 23-12.
Parker Moore (21-4) had Bison Matt Bailor (2-5) at 195 on his back four different times, but couldn’t quite plant the Bison newcomer and had to settle for a 17-1 tech fall after 3:01, bringing the Mounties back to 23-17.
Bison season win leader OIiver Billotte (26-3) scored the opening takedown against Tyler Anderson (10-8), but couldn’t turn Anderson and took only a 2-0 lead in to the second period. Billotte chose down and managed a reversal and pin all within 13 seconds to give the Bison a 12-point lead at 29-17.
In an evenly matched heavyweight bout, Philipsburg-Osceola’s Chase Klinger (7-6) outlasted Jon Doran (8-11) 1-0 with an escape during the sixth period tie-breaker. With at forfeit coming at 106, the loss by regular decision by Doran sealed the Bison team victory.
Clearfield’s Evan Davis (21-10) at 106 and P-O’s Nick Coudriet (18-7) at 113 traded forfeits giving the Bison an insurmountable 35-26 lead heading in to the final bout.
Mountie Scott Frantz (4-13) had a 6-2 lead in the second period and pinned Derrick Bender (6-15) to set the final team score at 35-32.
The win upped the Bison record to 9-5 on the season, while the Mounties dropped to the same 9-5 record.
The Bison also made it a sweep on the night defeating the P-O junior high for the first time in recent memory, 40-36.
Next up for the Bison will be the District 4-9 Team Wrestling Championships at DuBois High School on Saturday. The Bison will face St. Marys, a team Clearfield beat 39-24 earlier this season, at 11:15 in the quarterfinals, the winner advancing to the semis at 1:45 to face District 4’s Selinsgrove Seals.
