MEN’S SWIMMING
GROVE CITY — Freshman Chase Bietz (Clearfield) got his Penn State Behrend career off to a great start by winning three events at the Grove City Fall Classic Saturday.
He touched the James E. Longnecker Pool wall first in the 50-yard freestyle in 21.94 seconds, the 200 breaststroke in 2:11.50 and the 200 individual medley in 2:00.29.
Bietz also placed second in the 100 breaststroke in 59.22 seconds.
He participated in two relays for the Lions, swimming a 26.76 breaststroke leg for the ‘A’ 200 medley foursome that claimed second place with a 1:39.58 time and a 49.68 third split for the ‘A’ 400 free quartet that was third in 3:17.71.
Penn State Behrend finished third with 59.57 points in the four-team meet won by Grove City with a 1,032.5 total.

GROVE CITY — Sophomores Hayden Steiner (Clearfield) and Tate Swanson (Clearfield) were busy competing in multiple individual and relay races for Clarion at the Grove City Fall Classic Saturday.
Steiner had a pair of top-10 finishes, placing seventh in his first 200-yard butterfly in 2:15.34 and ninth in the 100 free in 50.96 seconds.
He finished 12th in the 500 free in 5:27.40, 13thx in the 200 individual medley in 2:14.34, 15th in his first 100 fly in 58.27 and 16th in the 200 free in 1:54.75.
In the relays, Steiner posted a 50.66 second split for the Golden Eagle ‘A’ 400 free quartet that earned runner-up laurels in 3:16.84 and a 24.76 fly leg for the ‘B’ 200 medley team that wound up eighth in 1:45.23.
Swanson placed 11th in his initial 100 backstroke in 1:00.34, 12th in the 100 free in 51.26 and 15th in the 50 free in 23.17 and 18th in the 500 free in 5:35.98.
He turned in a 50.83 leadoff leg for the ‘B’ free foursome that placed fifth in 3:23.89 and a 28.29 back split for the ‘C’ medley quartet that finished 12th in 1:49.85.

WOMEN’S SWIMMING
INDIANA — Freshman Paige Mikesell (Clearfield) was one of three triplewinners as Indiana University of Pennsylvania opened the season by defeating Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference rival Shippensburg 122-80 in Pidgeon Natatorium Oct. 3.
She pulled away to wins in the 100-yard butterfly in 57.62 seconds and in the 200 freestyle in 1:57.94 and swan the fly leg in 25.88 for the victorious 200 medley relay team that was clocked in 1:49.52.

MEN’S GOLF
UNIVERSITY PARK — Junior Brandon Orsich (Clearfield) and freshman Alec Graham (Clearfield) were instrumental in Penn State DuBois repeating as Pennsylvania State University Athletic Conference champion at the Penn State Blue Course last week.
Orsich carded rounds of 82 and 81 for a 163 total that tied for ninth place, while Graham contributed an 82-87-169 that tied for 14th place.
Ian Helsel led the Lions with an 85-74-159 that tied for fifth, and Colin Moore checked in with an 80-83-163.
After the first day, Penn State DuBois (329) trailed Penn State Fayette and Penn State Wilkes-Barre, but the 325 with Helsel, Orsich and Moore finishing in the top 10 enabled the Lions to vault into first place, just one stroke lower than Penn State Wilkes-Barre.
Individual honors went to Mont Alto’s Austin Green, who beat Penn State Wilkes-Barre’s Jonathan Wilson with a birdie on the first playoff hole, the par-5 No. 18, after they had matched 2-over-par 146s.
The Lions also placed ninth among 19 teams competing in the United State Collegiate Athletic Association Championships held in conjunction with the PSUAC tourney.

FOOTBALL
WORCESTER, Mass. —Worcester Polytechnic Institute senior kicker/punter Spencer Herrington (Clearfield) has been named to the Fred Mitchell Award watch list for the second year in a row.
A total of 21 placekickers in all three NCAA divisions and one NAIA division have been recognized for their excellence on the field as well as continued community service during the offseason.
Spencer, who was selected New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference Special Teams Player of the Week after booting seven extra points and one field goal in the 4-2 Engineers’ season-opening 54-0 win over Anna Maria, has made all 23 PATs and six of eight FG tries.
He ranks first in PATs and second in points (41) among NEWMAC placekickers and ranks first in punts landing inside the 20 and second in average (38.3) for his 28 punts.
According to a WPI football website release, Herrington is a Special Olympics volunteer and a member of the Engineer football’s partnership with a child from Team IMPACT as well as the Promotion of Animal Welfare Society.
The Fred Mitchell Award winner will be announced in mid-December.

NEW WILMINGTON — Senior linebacker Dusty Maines (Clearfield) was second in tackles with nine for Thiel in a 49-7 Presidents’ Athletic Conference loss to Westminster in front of 1,475 fans at Harold Burry Stadium Saturday.
The Tomcats fell to 0-6 in the PAC and 0-7 overall.
Maines owns a team-high 66 tackles, including 37 solo stops and one sack, with two tackles for losses of six yards. He also has forced one fumble.

DOYLESTOWN — Senior center Brad Stubbs (Curwensville) and his fellow Lycoming offensive linemen had their hands full with the No. 15-ranked Delaware Valley defense in their Middle Atlantic Conference clash at James Work Memorial Stadium Saturday.
The Warriors (3-3, 2-2 MAC) were held to 14 net yards rushing and 220 yards of total offense.
Still, they were leading 16-9 before the once-beaten hosts rallied for two touchdowns in the final 4:50 to remain tied atop the MAC with Misericordia at 4-0.

WOMEN’S SOCCER
ERIE — Midfielder Tessa Munshower (Clearfield) was one of two seniors honored before Penn State Behrend shut out Penn State Altoona 4-0 Saturday to remain undefeated in the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference.
Munshower made her seventh appearance of the season and 46th of her four-year career while freshman goalie Madi Jones (Clearfield) was credited with her third shutout when not even facing a shot on goal as Penn State Altoona recorded only two shots.
Earlier in the week, Jones turned away one of Pitt-Bradford’s two shots and Munshower also saw action when the Lions (8-6, 6-0 AMCC) triumphed 4-0.
The two shutouts lowered Jones’ goals-against average to 1.01 for more than 1,250 minutes between the pipes in 14 starts.

MEN’S CROSS COUNTRY
BUFFALO, N.Y. — Seton Hill freshman Alex Coval (Clearfield) ran the 8,000-meter Delaware Park course in a personal-record 3:16.9 in the Canisius Alumni Classic Saturday.
The Griffins finished eighth with a five-man score of 218.
Coval placed 64th among runners from the 10 teams vying for the championship and 95th overall.
