CLEARFIELD – Residents in Clearfield Borough are warned to secure their vehicles.

At Thursday’s Clearfield Borough Council work session, Police Chief Vincent McGinnis said the police department has been responding to an increase in thefts from motor vehicles.

McGinnis said during a theft incident, two handguns had been stolen and asked residents to be sure to secure their vehicles at night and when the vehicles are going to be unattended for long periods of time.

McGinnis also asked residents not to leave firearms in their vehicles.

The chief also reported that the department responded to a total of 628 incidents for the month.

Also at the meeting, Police Sergeant Nathan Curry reminded the council that the annual “Giving Tree” kick-off event will be held Nov. 20. He said he will have further information at next week’s meeting.

According to previously-published GANT News articles, last year’s Giving Tree provided a special Christmas for about 147 senior citizens in Clearfield and the surrounding areas.

More than 400 tags were on the tree and the response had been so overwhelming that more tags were added and that more than $5,000 had been collected and put in a bank account to provide assistance with purchasing heating fuel.

The “Giving Tree” program was started in 2015 as a collaborative effort amongst the police department, the Clearfield County Area Agency on Aging, CVS Pharmacy and Clearfield Pharmacy & Gift Shoppe.

Christmas trees are placed in the pharmacies with tags containing information about a local senior citizen and items they need or would like to receive.

Donors can also choose to donate money to be used for to purchase heating fuel.
