CLEARFIELD – James E. Van Zandt VA Medical Center of Altoona, in conjunction with Disabled American Veterans (DAV), is taking over the medical transportation program for veterans in Clearfield County, announced Commissioner Tony Scotto Tuesday.

Veterans may utilize the free program for transportation to both the DuBois Outpatient and Altoona VA Medical Clinics.

To schedule transportation to a medical appointment, veterans will still contact the Clearfield County office at 814-765-2642, Ext. 3008, Scotto said.

The commissioners also expressed the need for volunteers to support the medical transportation program for veterans. The program is currently in need of volunteer transportation schedulers and drivers.

“We would like to have as many volunteer drivers as possible,” said Commissioner John A. Sobel. “It can be very rewarding.”

For more information about becoming a volunteer, people are asked to please contact Amy Detterline, volunteer coordinator, at 814-940-7833.

Volunteer drivers must have a valid driver’s license and clean record, as well as pass an extensive physical examination. Vehicles and training are provided, according to the commissioners.

Anyone who has questions or who is in need of additional information is asked to contact Detterline at the Altoona VAMC or the commissioners’ office.
