WORCESTER, Mass. — Junior Spencer Herrington (Clearfield) was perfect in eight placekicking attempts to account for 12 points as Worcester Polytechnic Institute opened the season with a 48-0 rout of Anna Maria in Alumni Stadium Friday night.
A good crowd of 2,504 was on hand for the first meeting between the two Worcester County schools, which resulted in the Engineers’ first shutout since 2010.
Herrington booted field goals of 33 and 20 yards to go with six extra points.
He also punted four times for a 31.8-yard average, with his longest a 40-yarder.

GREENVILLE — Junior linebacker Dusty Maines (Clearfield) made two solo tackles for Thiel in a season-opening 38-6 non-conference loss to Allegheny in front of 800 fans at Alumni Stadium Thursday night.

BEAVER FALLS — Senior safety Austin Jacobson (Curwensville) had one solo tackle in Geneva’s heartbreaking 26-25 loss to Marietta (Ohio) at Reeves Field Saturday night.
Three PAT failures haunted the Golden Tornadoes after the visitors spoiled the opener for the 3,524 fans with two touchdowns in the final seven minutes, the game-winner coming with two minutes remaining.

HUNTINGDON — Senior Jon Janocko (Clearfield) started at left guard for the Juniata offensive unit that chalked up 441 yards in a 42-31 come-from-behind victory over non-conference foe Grove City at Knox Stadium Saturday afternoon.
A turnout of 1,000 fans braved the rain to watch the Eagles rally for four touchdowns in the final 21:08.

SELINSGROVE — Junior center Brad Stubbs (Curwensville) made his 16th consecutive start for Lycoming in a disappointing 7-6 Stagg Hat Trophy Game loss to host Susquehanna witnessed by 1,500 fans in Amos Alonzo Stagg Stadium Saturday afternoon.
The Warrior offense really struggled in the defensive duel, registering just nine first downs and only 229 total yards.

LOS ANGELES, Calif. — Freshman wide receiver Ryan Lezzer (Clearfield) got his first taste of action for Western Michigan against No. 4-ranked Southern Cal with a crowd of 61,125 sitting or standing in the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum Saturday afternoon.
The underdog Broncos were locked in a 28-28 tie with seven minutes remaining in the non-conference game, but the Trojans pulled away with three touchdowns to prevail 49-31.

MEN’S GOLF
BRADFORD — Pitt-Bradford senior Brett Gardner (Curwensville) finished in eighth place by tying his career low with a 78 and Thiel senior Jason Thorp (Curwensville) tied for 11th place with an 80 in the Pitt-Bradford Invitational at the Pine Acres Country Club Saturday.
Gardner’s round, which matched his score in the 2015 and 2016 Pitt-Bradford Invitationals, was second-best for the Panthers, who wound up fifth in the 16-team tourney with a 323 aggregate.
Thorp was medalist for the Tomcats, who were 11th with a 349.

WOMEN’S SOCCER
CLARION — Senior starter Carlee Freeberg (Clearfield) and the Clarion defensive unit shut out Gannon for 103 minutes before the Golden Knights converted a free kick into a goal for a 1-0 double overtime win over the Golden Eagles in their Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference opener at Memorial Stadium Thursday night.
Clarion’s ‘D’ allowed only two other shots on goal.
HARRISBURG — Sophomore forward Raquel Grice (Clearfield) played a reserve role in Penn State Harrisburg’s matching 3-0 shutouts of Delaware Valley at home Friday and Lancaster Bible on the road Saturday.
Grice was credited with one shot against Lancaster Bible.
