CENTRE COUNTY – Penn State University head football coach Bill O’Brien clarified on Monday the rumors that are surrounding his future at the university.
O’Brien addressed claims that he used interest from NFL teams to leverage himself a raise. He said he was contacted by many teams and had discussions, but he’s remaining at PSU and that’s just where he wants to be.
At the press conference, he said the NFL is the highest level of his profession, so he had talks out of respect. However, he ultimately loves coaching the students at Penn State and his current job.
He said his plan is to field the best football team possible at PSU. He stressed that this job was never about money. He expressively denied that a $1 million donation was made to get him to stay at PSU. He said he’s never asked for a raise.
“That’s the last thing I’m about,” O’Brien said, adding that he wants PSU to be “the best it can be for our student athletes.”
Athletic Director Dr. David Joyner attended the press conference and spoke with the media. He reiterated that there was neither a donation nor a raise offered.
O’Brien said he will be getting involved in his work, and the media will not be able to reach him for a while, as he focuses on recruiting and getting his team ready for spring.
