Belber R. Robinson, 81 of Clearfield, died on Saturday, December 17, 2011 at Clearfield Hospital.
He was born Oct. 14, 1930 to Maurice A. Robinson and Gertrude (Belber) Robinson in Clearfield. Belber graduated from Clearfield High School in 1948 where he was a member of the 1947-48 wrestling team. He then attended Bucknell University in 1948 and graduated in 1952 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Commerce and Finance. He was active at Bucknell all four years. Belber was voted to ODK (Omicron Delta Kappa) National Leadership Honorary and was also a member o Pi Delta Epsilon (National Journalism Honorary).
Belber was captain of the Bucknell Wrestling team in 1951 and was voted “outstanding wrestler” by his team mates as he finished as runner-up in the Middle Atlantic, losing 2-1 in the finale. He was president of Theta Chi Fraternity and served as the treasurer of the 1952 Senior Class. Belber was also the news editor of the weekly newspaper “the Bucknellian.”
He returned home in 1952 to work with his father at Robinson Mens Shop, a store that was a community favorite. Working with his father was tough but he taught Belber that hard work pays off. Belber’s father was a great teacher and a wonderful dad. They worked together until 1964 when his father passed away. Belber ran the store until 1980 as he sold his building and moved to State College to work at the Young Mens Shop and Jack Harpers.
Belber was a member of the Clearfield Chamber of Commerce, the Clearfield School Board, the Clearfield Hospital Board and the Clearfield Benevolent and Protective Order of the Elks Lodge #540.
He was a PIAA Wrestling official for over 20 years, officiating high school and college matches. He was also the president of the Central Northwest Regional Wrestling officials. He loved sports, was an avid golfer, and supported all of the Clearfield Athletics.
He was the first secretary-treasurer of the Arthur J. Weiss Scholarship Fund, serving for over 20 years.
Belber married in 1953 to the beautiful Jacqueline Ardary from Orlando, FL. They celebrated over 57 years together. She passed away in July 2010. They had four children – Gloria Ireland and her husband Richard, Joan Robinson McMillen and her husband Kevin, Bonnie Robinson Harper and her husband David all of Clearfield and Scott K. Robinson and his wife Penny of Clarks Summit.
He is survived by 7 grandchildren – Stacy Stewart, Matthew Ireland, Harrison McMillen, Alex Robinson, Nichole Robinson, Jessica Robinson and Courtney Robinson and 4 great grandchildren – Will, Abby, Remi and Kieran.
He also has one sister, Millicent ‘Mitzi’ Pollick and her husband John who also reside in Clearfield.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a granddaughter Angel Marie Robinson.
The family loved to get together at Thanksgiving when all were present at one or the others homes.
Funeral services will be held at the Kevin A. Beardsley Funeral Home, Clearfield on Wednesday at 10:00 a.m. Interment will follow in the Crown Crest Memorial Park, Hyde.
Friends will be received at the funeral home on Tuesday from 4-7:00 p.m. and on Wednesday from 9-10 a.m.
The family suggests that memorial contributions be made to the American Cancer Society, 26 S. Second Street, Clearfield or to the Arthur J. Weiss Wrestling Scholarship Fund, c/o Peggy Durant, 216 South Front Street, Clearfield.
