HYDE — After going 5-0 and winning the Bison Duals over the weekend, a little letdown might have been expected from the Clearfield Bison wrestling team, but led by their senior-laden line up on Senior Recognition Night, the Bison matmen turned in a dominating performance in beating the Huntingdon Bearcats, 56-13.
The Bearcats started the evening on top when Liam Simpson (15-6) recorded a first period fall over Xavier Lutz (4-6) at 106 pounds, but Clearfield evened the score at 6-6 as Evan Davis (15-6) received at forfeit win at 113.
Huntingdon recaptured the lead, 9-6, at 120 pounds when Ryan Yocum (13-7) decisioned Clearfield’s Adam Rougeux (8-9) 10-9. Trailing 10-4 after two periods, Rougeux scored a takedown and three nearfall points in the third period, and had the Bearcat turned a few times, but couldn’t score the winning points in a valiant effort.
At 126, freshman Brady Collins (20-2) put the Bison in the lead again, 12-9, with a first period fall over Landon Dunsmore (17-4).
Senior Nolan Barr (13-9) looked sharp in pitching a shutout, 9-0, for a major decision victory over Eden Wagner (17-5) at 132, giving the Bison a 16-9 dual meet lead.
Ty Aveni (6-5) excited the crowd at 138 in a match between the head coach’s kids with a second period pin of Eric Mykut (14-6). Aveni, who is quickly earning accolades for being tough from the top position, showed just that as he turned the Bearcat for three nearfall points, before turning and flattening him in 3:37.
Huntingdon would get a little closer at 145l when Devin Grubb (17-3) major decisioned Luke Freeland (14-7) 13-4, to close the Bison lead to 22-13.
That’s when the Bison seniors stepped forward and showed the Bearcats why it wasn’t their night. Senior Karson Kline (11-5) pinned Owen Garlock (1-10) in the first period at 152; then fellow senior Wyatt Reorda (3-4) flattened Kyler Garner (10-9) in 36 seconds at 160, to increase the Bison lead to 34-13.
At 170 pounds, senior Mark McGonigal (17-5) delighted the crowd with a quick takedown and tilt to deck Mason Taylor (0-5) in just six seconds.
Carter Chamberlain (15-5) kept the pin train rolling with a second period pressing of Lincoln Miller (8-12), building the Bison lead to 46-13.
Senior Hayden Kovalick (20-1) put six more points on the board for the Bison with a first period fall of Treyson Poorman (4-10) at 215.
Undefeated senior Oliver Billotte (17-0) capped off the Bison rout with a 12-2 major decision over Gunner Singleton (21-4) at 285 pounds to set the final score at 56-13.
With the win, the Bison improve to 12-0 on the season and will be back in action this weekend when they participate in the Ultimate Warrior Tournament at West Branch High School. Clearfield won the Junior High match earlier in the evening, 40-36.
