CLEARFIELD – Clearfield County District Attorney William A. Shaw Jr. and Sheriff Mike Churner are opposing proposed H.B. 768, the “Firearm Registration Act.”
Shaw said he’s personally contacted the county’s state representatives and requested both to oppose passage of this legislation.
“H.B. 768 violates the Second Amendment of both the state and federal constitutions,” he explained. “Passage … would only cause costly and unnecessary litigation.”
Under proposed H.B. 768, gun owners would be required to register their firearms with the state police and to undergo a background check.
In addition, the legislation seeks to impose a $10 annual registration fee per owned firearm. Churner said someone who owns 10 firearms would be required to pay $100 every year.
Churner added that he knows many citizens who own dozens of firearms and this legislation, if passed, could cost them thousands each year.
Shaw and Churner are encouraging citizens to contact their local state representatives and voice their opposition to this proposed legislation that they say is “unconstitutional.”
