U.S. Rep. Glenn ‘GT’ Thompson has announced the winner of the 2019 Congressional Art Competition: Cindy Lam, a 10th-grader at DuBois Area High School.
Lam of DuBois won for her prismacolor pencil drawing titled, “Self.” An independent panel of judges selected Lam’s work from a record 68 entries, which is one of the largest groups of students to participate in Pennsylvania’s 15th Congressional District Art Competition.
The Congressional Art Competition began in 1982 to provide an opportunity for members of Congress to encourage and recognize the artistic talents of their young constituents. Since then, more than 650,000 high school students have participated in the nationwide competition.
Lam’s artwork will be displayed in a special exhibit in the U.S. Capitol for one year with winners from each congressional district in the nation. She’s invited to attend a reception in Washington, D.C. with other winners, which will take place in June.
“Congratulations to Cindy Lam on winning first place in the annual Artistic Discovery Congressional Art Competition,” Thompson said.
“It will be great to see her work hang in the tunnel to the Capitol with winners from throughout the country. It is a fantastic year-long exhibit.
“This was one of our largest competitions, and I am proud of each of the 68 contestants.”
New This Year:
For the first time, Thompson will host a “People’s Choice Award” contest on Facebook that will allow individuals to vote for their favorite work on social media.
The photograph with the most “likes” will be named the People’s Choice Award Winner. The week-long competition starts at 12 p.m. Thursday, May 9 and ends at 12 p.m. Thursday, May 16, 2019.
The winners were announced Saturday during an exhibit at the Winkler Gallery of Fine Art in DuBois.
