Richard D. Humphrey passed from this life on Sunday, Dec. 1, 2013 at his home. Born July 5, 1927 in Philipsburg to the late Theodore and Nellie (Johnson) Humphrey, he was the youngest of seven children.
He graduated from Philipsburg High School in 1945 and entered the U.S. Army, where he served in Germany. He was a member of the First Baptist Church, Philipsburg and also attended St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, Philipsburg.
He retired from the Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board, having worked in Bellefonte, State College, Snow Shoe, Houtzdale and Philipsburg. Before being diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease, he was an avid golfer and swimmer and excelled in sports through high school.
He is survived by his wife, Darlene (Trella) Humphrey, whom he married Dec. 27, 1964; a niece, Judy Payne of Pennsylvania and nephews Ted (Becky) Monroe of Florida, Theodore (Judy) Humphrey of Ohio, Max (Pam) Humphrey of North Carolina, Reed (Kim) Humphrey of Montana and Jim (Sharon) Hagyard and John (Kathy) Hagyard, both of Philipsburg.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Theodore, Max and Bernard and three sisters Nellie Hart, Ruth Roehm and Jacquelyn Slee.
A celebration of life will be held at 1 p.m. May 18 at the Philipsburg Cemetery, with Father William R. Walker and the Rev. Brenda K. Leigey officiating. In case of inclement weather, the service will be held at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, Philipsburg.
Military honors will be accorded by the U.S. Army.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to a charity of the donor’s choice.
The family would like to give a special “Thank You” to everyone who helped Mr. Humphrey through the years with the “scooter,” as it was his independence.
