CLEARFIELD – The Clearfield Center for Active Living will offer area residents the opportunity to visit some local spots of interest this summer.
A variety of tours are offered, including a local rhododendron garden in bloom, an organic farm and school of country living, the Johnstown Flood Museum and the Shanksville Flight 93 Memorial.
On June 3, there will be a free tour of the George & Anne Thacik Rhododendron Garden in Curwensville, followed by lunch at your own expense at the Strawberry Tree. Transportation will not be provided for this excursion.
A free tour of Quiet Creek Herb Farm & School of Country Living will be held on June 19. There will be instruction on organic gardening and worm composting, a presentation on Gambling Away the Golden Years and lunch will be provided by Quiet Creek.
The agency and the Clearfield-Jefferson Link will provide bus transportation. Reservations are required and can be made by calling 814-765-2696.
On Sept. 11, the 12th anniversary of the 9/11 tragedy, there will be motor coach transportation to tour the Flight 93 Memorial in Shanksville and the National Johnstown Flood Museum. The bus will depart Clearfield at 8 a.m. and tour the Flood Museum before a lunch at Red Lobster, then continue to Shanksville for a self-guided tour of the Memorial.
Cost of the tours and transportation that day is $40. Lunch is at your own expense. Please call the center at 814-765-9319 to make your reservations for the Rhododendron or Shanksville tour. Reservations are limited, and available on a first-come, first serve basis for all tours.
The spring Dining Out Club discount booklets are available at the center to individuals 50 and older. There are a number of weeks left in the program: weeks eight through 12 include coupons to Hedges Fine Food, Billy’s Burger Land, Dairy Queen, Spanky’s Courthouse Café and Pizza Hut Wing Street.
The annual stroke screening will be held at the center on May 22 from 11 a.m. until 12 p.m. County individuals age 50 and up can receive the screen, which is provided free through a partnership with the Clearfield Career & Technology Center’s nursing program.
The center is open 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. weekdays, and is located in the Clearfield County Area Agency on Aging building at 103 N. Front St. in Clearfield.
