CLEARFIELD – Mountain Laurel Kennel Club members caution animal lovers to protect their pets’ ears during the coming Fourth of July and summer celebrations.
“With highly sensitive ears, even the most docile animal can panic at the loud sound of fireworks. Many bolt to escape the noise and end up wandering or lost,” said MLKC President Geremy Kephart
“Summer holidays can be a real headache to the SPCA, animal control officers and the police, not to mention the anxiety felt by the panicked pets’ owners,” said Kephart.
The club urges common sense and recommends:
– as with children, never allow animals near a fireworks display
– keep pets inside, comfortable and in a place away from windows and doors
– consider boarding or asking a friend in a quiet area to babysit
– turn up music or television to blot out the sound of fireworks. Close drapes or blinds to minimize light
– keep your pet calm and try not to telegraph worry
– for severe cases, discuss sedatives or anti-anxiety medication with your veterinarian
