Public Webinar to Cover Substance Use and Trends in Pennsylvania

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — Penn State Extension will host a webinar, Substance Use and Trends in Pennsylvania, from noon to 1 p.m. July 16.

Presenters will discuss the evolving nature of the opioid epidemic in Pennsylvania and beyond, highlighting significant changes crucial for prevention, treatment and recovery support services.

This webinar is designed for professionals in drug and alcohol prevention, treatment, or recovery; family members of those dealing with addiction; and Pennsylvania residents.

The session will cover:

— Definitions of substance use and substance use disorders, and the difference between them.

— Current trends of substance use and related statistics in Pennsylvania.

— Information on new drugs in Pennsylvania, including Xylazine, stimulants and Fenethylline.

— Strategies for identifying evidence-based practices to address substance use and substance use disorders.

Glenn Sterner, an expert on the opioid epidemic, will share strategies for addressing substance use. An assistant professor of criminal justice at Penn State Abington, he serves on Pennsylvania’s opioid overdose task force and is a founding member of the Penn State Consortium to Combat Substance Abuse advisory board. He also founded the Share Your Opioid Story initiative.

Penn State Extension offers this event at no charge, but registration by 11:59 p.m. July 15 is required to receive the webinar link. Registrants also will receive access to the webinar recording.
