CLAYSBURG – The Curwensville softball team dropped its first game of the season on Thursday evening to Claysburg-Kimmel by a 6-0 score. The loss sets the Lady Tide record at 5-2 while the Bulldogs move to 7-0 on the season.
While the game looked to be one-sided, it really could be described as a pitching duel. Of course, senior C-K pitcher Emalee Cavender notched the victory giving up just one hit and striking out 10 with no walks. But Tide sophomore Addison Siple struck out 11 on the day while giving up just six hits and walking two.
The Bulldogs broke open the scoring in the third inning, scoring two runs as only one hit got out of the infield. A single and a Cavender double opened the inning, but the scoring was set up by an error and a groundout allowed the runs to score.
A Cavender triple, a single, a walk and an error led to three runs in the fifth inning. And the final run scored as a result of another Tide error in the sixth inning.
Cavender had a perfect game in progress until with one out in the seventh inning Addison Warren singled. The only other Curwensville runner on the day was Siple who followed with a fielder’s choice and replaced Warren at first.
“We had no doubts that this was going to be a battle,” Tide Coach Allen Leigey said. “We had nothing to lose coming in, and I told the girls we just needed to keep it close to have a chance.”
The biggest take-away for the Tide is the fact that they were the first team this season to take the Bulldogs into the seventh inning. No one to date has been able to avoid the 10-run mercy rule against Claysburg-Kimmel.
Curwensville will host the always competitive Glendale Vikings on Saturday morning. The game is slated for an 11:00 start at Coach Andy Evanko Stadium.
