PHILIPSBURG — A five-game losing streak dating back to last year’s District 9 Championship game came to an end on Tuesday afternoon as the Clearfield Lady Bison defeated the host Philipsburg-Osceola Lady Mounties.
Freshman Joell Henry picked up her first career win in the circle, limiting the Lady Mounties to five hits and two runs as she threw a complete game with only one walk and seven strikeouts.
The Lady Bison had 11 hits, led by Eve Siegel’s three and Sam Campolong’s two, to plate six runs, five in the fifth inning, off of losing pitcher Alivia Bizzarri.
Siegel had a two-out single up the middle to plate Aevril Hayward, who had doubled, to give the visitors an early lead in the top of the first inning.
The score remained 1-0 Clearfield, as the pitchers put up nine consecutive goose eggs, until the top of the sixth inning.
Siegel led off the inning with her second single up the middle and was safe at second on Madi McBride’s fielder’s choice. McBride also reached base on the play. Campolong then bunted for an infield single to load the bases. After an out, Alexus Green also reached base on a fielder’s choice as Siegel beat the throw home to make it 2-0, while the Lady Bison still had the bases loaded with one out. Paige Houser then grounded one off the first baseman’s glove for a single and two runs scored as the ball skirted past the drawn in infield. Ruby Singleton then got an infield single to re-load the bases. After the second out, Hayward worked Bizzarri for a walk to make it 5-0. Siegel then got an infield single, her second hit of the inning, to deep in the hole at short, plating the final run of the inning and had the Bison up 6-0.
The Lady Mounties finally cracked the scoreboard in the bottom of the sixth as they tried to mount a comeback.
Alli Muir started off the inning with a laser to short for a single. After an out, Emily Gustkey lined a double to left and advanced to third as Muir scored. Bizzarri then singled up the middle to plate Gustkey. After Maci Bush singled, the hosts were in business with two runners on. Henry then settled back down and recorded five consecutive outs over the rest of the game, including a backwards K to finish it out.
The Lady Bison (1-4) will next host their District 9 rival St. Marys (5-0) on Thursday at 4:30 at the Bison Sports Complex.
