DCNR released statewide fall foliage reports for week 5. Here is an overview.
Statewide Fall Foliage Overview
Although the statewide peak has passed, spectacular color still adorns Penn’s Woods. Northern oak forests have just begun to peak, offering late season sights in areas where the northern hardwoods are declining.
The best color can now be found in the southeastern third of the Keystone State from the middle and southern Appalachians to the Coastal Plain.
Clearfield County
The Clearfield County (Moshannon State Forest District) service forester said despite losing leaves over the weekend due to wind and frost, many species are currently displaying rich color. These include American beech (yellow), maples (yellow, orange, red), sassafras (yellow), and red oak (muted yellow).
A recommended drive is Route 969 between Curwensville and Bell’s Landing where the oak-dominated hillsides are still displaying vivid colors.
Be sure to visit the lakeside and hike the trails at Curwensville Dam off Route 453 south of Curwensville.
