CURWENSVILLE – It was a big night at Curwensville Area High School Tuesday night as senior Ty Terry went over 1,000 points for his varsity basketball career in a 62-55 win for the Golden Tide (5-13) over visiting Bellwood-Antis (9-9).
Terry needed just seven points and nailed a three-pointer in the first quarter to hit 1,000 points on the dot. Terry ended the game at 1,014 career points for the Golden Tide as his hot start to the game was not the only impact he would have on the game. His 21 points paced the home team for a season split with the visiting Blue Devils.
Back on January 3, the Golden Tide started out that game strong, but could not remain consistent and fell to Bellwood-Antis in the opening matchup of the 2021-22 season, 59-44. Tuesday was a different story, however, as the Golden Tide picked up their second consecutive win and were able to hold off a fourth quarter comeback attempt from the Blue Devils.
A 20-10 advantage after the first quarter, thanks in large part to nine points from Terry in the period, helped the Golden Tide get out to the double-digit advantage they were looking for. Curwensville clung to the lead in the second quarter as Parker Wood scored seven of his 19 to help the home team remain in front by double-digits at 32-22 after a half of play.
Out of the break, Curwensville continued their solid play as they extended the lead by three by the end of the quarter, with Terry netting five, Ayden Sutika scoring four, and Chandler English also chipping in four to lead a balanced offense for the quarter.
With a 13-point lead, Curwensville was in the driver’s seat, but the Blue Devils scored 21 fourth quarter points, which helped them mount a bit of a comeback. Sean Mallon led all scorers for the game with 30 points for Bellwood-Antis, including 14 in the fourth quarter. However, a slow start and free throw shooting hurt the Blue Devils late, and despite 21 points in the final period, Curwensville added 15 points of their own to come away with a 62-55 victory.
Balanced scoring was a key to victory for the Golden Tide as six different players were able to find the scoring column in the game for the home team. Following up Terry and Wood was Danny McGarry with seven points, English with six, Fleming with five, and Sutika with four.
Mallon undoubtedly had the hot hand for Bellwood-Antis in this one, with five teammates also finding their way into the scoring column on Tuesday evening. Corry Shanafalt narrowly missed out on double-figures as he added eight tallies. Dawson Miller and Caleb Beiswenger followed Shanafalt with five and four points respectfully. Rounding out the scoring for the visitors was Chance Schreier with two points.
The Golden Tide will look to continue their win streak on Friday, February 4 as they take on Juniata Valley in a home matchup. The Golden Tide will look to avenge a loss from January 7 against the Hornets. Junior-varsity is set to kick-off the action on Friday with a game at 6:00 p.m. with the varsity game slated to tip at 7:30 p.m.
