WESTOVER – Senior Adam Miller led the way for the Curwensville Golden Tide boys basketball team on Monday in Westover, as the Tide edged the Harmony Owls 58-56 in the final seconds in Moshannon Valley League (MVL) play.
Miller’s game high 21 tallies kept Curwensville in the game until Scott Condon’s lay-up with just 24 seconds to play helped lift the Golden Tide to the win.
Curwensville head coach Matt Wassil said afterwards, “This feels good, real good to get a win at Harmony anytime you can. It was such a competitive game throughout as both teams fought very hard tonight.”
The Owls did have an 18-12 advantage after one quarter thanks to eight points each from Adam McGarvey and Jordan Schneider.
Harmony would maintain a lead throughout the second quarter right into halftime but the Tide never allowed the Owls to get a large type stranglehold margin, leading from two to six points.
It was Tide sophomore Ty Terry hitting a three-pointer at the buzzer in the second frame that cut into the Owls lead at 34-31 going into the break.
Harmony did extend its lead after three periods, 50-44, thanks to seven points from McGarvey. But it was Miller keeping the hopes of Curwensville up, dumping in 10 points of his own.
Curwensville would play its best stretch of defense in the fourth quarter, limiting the Owls to just six points, to pick up the come from behind win.
The only time Curwensville was out in front in the battle was when Condon put the lay-up in with 24 ticks left on the clock that would actually end up being the final score 58-56, Tide.
McGarvey, with the buzzer sounding, had a long three-point attempt hit off the glass and spin in and out of the basket taking away the hopes and dreams of the Owl faithful.
Then Wassil commented, “Our game plan was to go inside to Adam (Miller) tonight and that really paid off for us. We did play well at times off and on then it would get away from us but the guys dug in and hung tough to pick up the win.”
Harmony had three players in double figures with McGarvey leading the way with 16 and Jordan Schneider and Jayden Westover each having 12.
As mentioned, Miller was the game’s high point man with 21 while Terry added 15 and Trevor Lansberry dumping in 12 in the Curwensville win.
The Owls, now 4-16 and 4-4 in league action, knocked off Curwensville earlier this season on the Tide’s home court, 55-39.
Harmony did win the junior varsity game over the Tide, 38-33. Jayson Rowles had nine points for Curwensville.
The Golden Tide, 3-16 overall and 3-4 in the MVL, travel to Amesville on Wednesday to play Moshannon Valley in another Moshannon Valley League game starting with JVs at 6 pm and the varsity to immediately follow.
Curwensville defeated the Black Knights in early December, in Curwensville, 53-47.
