CURWENSVILLE – After posting a record of 17-3 during the 2018-19 season the Redbank Valley High School wrestling squad picked up right were it left off after last year, beating Curwensville Thursday night on the Golden Tide mat in Patton Hall 59-12.
Curwensville jumped out to a quick 12-0 before the Bulldogs scored 59 unanswered points to go to 2-0 on the season.
This was the Golden Tide’s first time on the mats.
Junior Jake McCracken of Curwensville, wrestling at 170 pounds, put the Tide in front to start the evening with a fall in 2:57 over Bulldog Coltin Bartley.
Teammate Duane Brady followed suit with a fall of his own at 182, pinning Zeldon Fisher of Redbank Valley at 2:24, giving Curwensville that quick 12-0 margin.
After that, Redbank Valley picked up five pins, three forfeits and two major decisions that dashed any hopes of a Golden Tide upset in front of an almost full house at Patton Hall.
The Tide had good effort all night long highlighted by freshman Nick Fegert at 126 pounds taking on defending District 9 champion Trenton Rupp. Fegert got the initial takedown and stayed with Rupp throughout most of match before losing 12-4 to the more experienced and seasoned Rupp.
The junior high match was won by Curwensville with an impressive 57-21 win over the Bulldogs.
Curwensville returns to wrestling action on Saturday at 9 am traveling to Ridgway to compete in this year’s Ridgway Duals.
