STATE COLLEGE – Pink Zone was presented with a check for support from Kenn Starr of Starr Hill Winery.
The funds were generated by the sale of a customer-made pink wine made specifically for and to honor breast cancer survivors.
At a reception, Pink Eve, which kicks off the weekend of the Lady Lion basketball team’s Play4Kay game benefitting Pink Zone, Starr presented the check.
At the game, 409 registered survivors were honored on court during halftime and it was announced that cumulatively the survivors have lived more than 2,700 years since their diagnosis.
“Who hasn’t been touched by this cause?” said Starr concerning his winery’s gift—one of its biggest.
He said his wife, Jacqueline, used to work in oncology at Mount Nittany Health and saw cancer’s devastating effects every day.
Woodring praised the partnership. “Pink Zone’s collaboration with Starr Hill Vineyard and Winery demonstrates the unique ways in which we honor survivors and raise funds,” she said.
Starr distributes the Pink Zone Honoring Survivors wine commercially and donates a portion of the proceeds to Pink Zone.
He said his wines are sold at Wal-Marts and multiple other locations in Pennsylvania and the exposure enhances recognition for Pink Zone throughout the commonwealth.
Pink Zone is tied to the Penn State Lady Lion basketball team and since 2006 has honored breast cancer survivors at one game each season.
The event raises money for breast cancer research, diagnosis, prevention, treatment and education. Pink Zone distributes funds to six beneficiaries: Geisinger-Lewistown Hospital, J.C. Blair Memorial Hospital, Kay Yow Foundation, Mount Nittany Health, PA Breast Cancer Coalition and Penn State Cancer Institute.
