FOOTBALL

CLEVELAND, Ohio — Senior outside linebacker Dusty Maines (Clearfield) extended his streak of double-figure tackles to four, but Thiel’s defense couldn’t slow down No. 18-ranked Case Western Reserve’s attack unit in a 63-20 loss with 1,657 fans looking on at DiSanto Field Saturday night.

Maines made four solo stops and assisted on eight others, one a tackle for a two-yard loss, to share a second-best total of 12 tackles for the Tomcats, who tumbled to 0-3 in the Presidents’ Athletic Conference and 0-4 overall.

The undefeated Spartans amassed 532 yards in their third win.

Maines’ 26 solo tackles and 48 total tackles are tops for the Tomcats.

He has two tackles for losses of five yards and has forced one fumble.

WORCESTER, Mass. — Senior kicker/punter Spencer Herrington (Clearfield) converted both extra point tries for Worcester Polytechnic Institute in a 17-14 loss to defending New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference champion Springfield in front of 2,813 fans at Alumni Stadium Saturday.

Herrington had a chance to tie the game in the final minute of the all-important NEWMAC opener, but his 45-yard field goal attempt was tipped and hit the turf short and left of the uprights.

He punted four times for a 44.3 yards with a long of 55 yards that equaled his career best.

The Engineers slipped to 2-2 because of Springfield’s fourth-down touchdown with 6:52 remaining.

Herrington’s season totals show 17 PATs and two field goals for 23 points.

He has averaged 39.3 yards for 23 punts.

MADISON, N.J. — Senior center Brad Stubbs (Curwensville) anchored the line for the Lycoming offense that produced touchdowns in every quarter for a 27-21 win that spoiled Saturday afternoon for the Fairleigh Dickinson University-Florham fans in the crowd of 872 at Robert Shields Field.

The visiting Warriors (3-1) needed two goal line stands in the final six minutes to emerge as one of the four 2-0 teams in the Middle Atlantic Conference.

PITTSBURGH — Freshman goalkeeper Madi Jones (Clearfield) registered a season-high six saves as Penn State Behrend defeated host La Roche 5-2 in the 2018 Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference opener at the Baierl Athletic Complex Saturday.

Senior midfielder Tessa Munshower (Clearfield) made her second appearance for Penn State Behrend in that game.

Jones has been between the pipes for 721 minutes and 45 seconds with 24 saves and 13 goals allowed.
