BELLEFONTE – The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced Tuesday that work to replace a box culvert on Chestnut Grove Road (Route 4004) in Union Township will continue through at least Aug. 3.

The detour will remain in effect until the replacement is complete.

The box culvert spans a tributary of Wallace Run on Route 4004. The road will be closed during the replacement and traffic detoured using Route 504 and Route 144 in Wingate.

This project is a joint effort between PennDOT and Nestlerode Contracting Co Inc. PennDOT Centre County Maintenance will be excavating the old box culvert, prepping and back-filling the new box culvert and mulching and seeding. Nestelrode will install the new box culvert. All work is weather dependent.

The expected completion date was July 27, but the project encountered delays. Should work progress allow, PennDOT will re-open the bridge before Aug. 3.

The eight-foot bridge dates from 1931 and carries approximately 440 vehicles each day. Drivers are reminded to follow detour signs, obey posted speed limits and always buckle up.

Motorists can check conditions on more than 40,000 roadway miles by visiting www.511PA.com. 511PA is free, available 24 hours a day, and provides traffic delay warnings, weather forecasts, traffic speed information, and access to more than 860 traffic cameras.

511PA is also available through a smartphone application for iPhone and Android devices, by calling 5-1-1, or by following regional Twitter alerts accessible on the 511PA Web site.
