DUBOIS — Senior Kylee Lingenfelter pitched a one-hitter with 15 strikeouts in five innings to lead No. 1 seed Punxsutawney past St. Marys 10-0 in the District 9 Class AAAA softball championship game at Heindl Memorial Field Friday afternoon.
The title is the fourth in a row for the Lady Chucks, with the first two in Class AAA before the PIAA switched from four to six classes in the 2015-16 school year.
Lingenfelter, a Penn State commit, dominated as the No. 2 seed Flying Dutch, who defeated Clearfield 5-4 in a nine-inning semifinal Wednesday, had only two baserunners.
She struck out the last 12 batters she faced.
Freshman Sarah Weaver got the Punxsy (14-3) offense rolling with a two-run single in the second inning. Lingenfelter contributed a two-run double and freshman Kendal Johnston capped the eight-run outburst with her second double of the rally, good for two RBIs.
Punxsy’s opponent in the first round of the PIAA Class AAAA Tournament June 4 will be the loser of Wednesday’s District 7 (WPIAL) game between Elizabeth Forward and Belle Vernon.
