CLEARFIELD – A local Eagle Scout was recently presented with the fifth annual Gerald Read Memorial Scholarship.
The scholarship was initiated by the Clearfield Area High School’s class of 1973 to honor its fallen classmate.
Gerald “Jerry” Read was killed during the Naval Shipyard Massacre in Washington D.C. in 2013, at which time 12 people were murdered by a lone gunman.
Read worked for the Naval Shipyard in cyber security after 30 years of service with the Army Reserves. He was killed as he saved the life of a co-worker.
The scholarship is awarded annually to a CHS Eagle Scout who will pursue a four-year college degree.  This year’s winner is Abraham Steiner, who will attend the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown this fall.
Donations towards the Gerald Read Memorial Scholarship will continue to be accepted through the Clearfield County Charitable Foundation.
