DUBOIS – A DuBois man accused of assaulting his mother with a light saber waived his right to a preliminary hearing Friday during centralized court.

Andrew C. Vargas, 42, was charged with simple assault and harassment by Sandy Township police after an incident April 27 at his home.

According to the affidavit of probable cause, police were dispatched to the scene in response to a call from Andrew Vargas. He reported the incident and claimed there may be some mental health issues with his mother.

When police arrived, she was in an ambulance parked in front of the house. The officer could see she was bleeding from the top of her head and her wrist. An emergency worker advised police there was a gash on the victim’s head.

The victim reportedly said she was sitting in the dining room when Vargas began striking her head, back/neck and wrist with one of his many “light sabers.” She further described the weapon as a stick.

Crying while recounting the assault, she stated she was “not taking this abuse any more.” She did not know why he struck her, according to police.

She was transported to Penn Highlands DuBois for treatment. Vargas was questioned at the Q Care clinic where he had gone after the alleged assault.

In his interview with police, he denied hitting his mother and claimed she was hitting herself.

He remains in the county jail in lieu of $10,000 bail.
