PHILIPSBURG — A five-run first inning highlighted by Hannah Thompson’s three-run home run was more than enough for pitcher Kylie Adams as unbeaten Philipsburg-Osceola defeated Clearfield 8-2 in schoolgirl softball action at Curtis Park Wednesday evening.
The Mountain League make-up game was called after six innings because of darkness.
Brooke Cline had three of the Lady Bison’s seven hits off Adams, who struck out four and walked none in her third victory of the season.
Erica Hanes belted a homer in the third inning for Clearfield, which got its other run in the third on singles by Kirstin Norman and Kate Lansberry and their double steal.
Abby Fedder was the losing pitcher, but only the last three runs she yielded were earned.
The Bison should have been out of the first inning before the Lady Mounties struck with Thompson’s homer igniting the outburst. Kendra Carns closed it with a two-run double following a single by Jayde Burge and a double by Rachel Simpson.
Simpson capped P-O’s scoring with a two-out, two-run double in the fourth frame.
The Lady Mounties totaled 13 hits off Fedder, who worked four innings, and Hanes with Simpson collecting three and Thompson, Burge and Carns adding two apiece.
P-O, which downed rival Bald Eagle Area 7-3 earlier in the make-up doubleheader with first place at stake, now sits alone atop the league at 6-0.
Clearfield fell to 1-2 in the league and 2-3 overall.
The Lady Bison will be back at it Thursday in a home make-up game against Central. Those two teams will meet again Friday at Martinsburg.
