CURWENSVILLE — Both of Curwensville Area High School’s wrestlers have byes for the preliminary round at the 2017 PIAA Class AA Championships that get under way Thursday in the Giant Center at Hershey, according to brackets coach Dean Swatsworth received Sunday.
Four bouts at each weight in a session that is scheduled for 9 a.m., will set the pairings for the first round that will follow immediately on six mats.
Northwest Region 9 heavyweight champion Steven McClure’s first match will be against either Southwest Region fourth placer Nate Martin (30-8) of Central Cambria or Southeast Region sixth placer Joseph Kocher (30-8).
Both are seniors, as is District 9 silver medalist McClure (30-3) in his first trip to states.
Golden Tide junior 113-pounder Blake Passarelli, the NW Region silver medalist on his way to Chocolatetown for the third year in a row, will meet SE Region third placer Dalton Gimbor (37-8), a Brandywine Heights freshman.
Passarelli (28-5) is the District 9 champ.
The first round of consolations also will be contested that day, starting at approximately 1:15 p.m.
Two sessions are on the Friday schedule at 9 a.m. and 7:3 p.m.
Championship matches and consy finals for third, fifth and seventh places will be contested simultaneously at each weight Saturday following the Pennsylvania Wrestling Coaches Association’s Coach of the Year presentation at 1:40 p.m. and the Parade of Champions.
