PHILIPSBURG – The Windy Hill Village Academy, located in Westminster Place at Windy Hill Village in Philipsburg, has announced its January schedule of free classes for residents as well as the local public.

The classes are taught by local volunteers and aim to provide educational activities for those citizens, especially age 50 and over.  Community residents in the greater Moshannon Valley and Clearfield and Centre counties are welcome to attend.

The four core areas of emphasis, offered by the academy, are spiritual, intellectual, physical and social.  Classes are 60 to 90 minutes in length.

The classes have no tests, no grades and no pressure to perform.  They are designed for the education and enjoyment of those attending.

January classes are:

  • Monday, Jan. 15 Eyes On The Prize America’s Civil Rights Years … Part 1 … Awakenings… 1954 to 1956: It will be taught by David Wulderk. You can come to learn and enjoy this acclaimed and high-quality PBS DVD series that used archival news film, to portray the struggle for equal rights by African-Americans in the 1950’s and 1960’s.  The class will view the DVDs in segments and discuss the impact of this historical and emotionally moving series.  It is a superb historical landmark to both review and stimulate memories of recent history taking place within many of our lifetimes.
  • Monday, Jan. 22 Eyes On The Prize America’s Civil Rights Years  Fighting Back …  1957 to 1962
  • Monday, Jan. 29 Eyes On the Prize America’s Civil Rights Years    Ain’t Scared Of Your Jails …  1960 to 1961

Classes begin at 10 a.m. Those interested may contact Windy Hill’s Lifestyle Coordinator   Michael Bellfy at 814-342-8414 or mbellfy@psl.org.

The schedule of classes for February will be announced later this month.  In the event of harsh winter weather, classes will be postponed and moved to the next scheduled Monday date.
