PHILIPSBURG — Curwensville Area High School top-seeded wrestlers Zach Holland and Steven McClure won titles and Blake Passarelli placed third at the season-opening Philipsburg-Osceola Mountaineer Tournament Saturday.
After pinning General McLane’s Dominic Shrader at 2:44, sophomore 138-pounder Holland relied on takedowns to edge Punxsutawney’s Jake Skarbec 4-3 and Marion Center’s Mike Turner 4-1 to reign.
“Zach picked up right where he left off last year,” Golden Tide coach Dean Swatsworth said.
McClure also had two tough bouts after pinning Juniata’s Evan Renninger at 4:15 in the quarterfinals.
Like his teammate, the senior heavyweight prevailed because of takedowns in decisions over Central Dauphin East’s Kyle Waters 3-2 and Punxsutawney’s Alexander Neal 9-6.
“Both of Steven’s matches were really good,” Swatsworth said. “He’s starting to be more aggressive on his feet. It helps he’s about 260 pounds. He’s in the upper half of the heavyweights. Last year, he was about 240.”
Passarelli drew a first-round bye and had the misfortune of bumping into eventual 126 champion, Neshaminy’s Colton Jordan in the semis, where he was a fall victim.
“I think everybody except his coaches was surprised that happened,” Swatsworth said. “I thought Blake would be in the finals, but that kid was a lot better than the fourth seed. He ended up with two pins and a technical fall, so you can’t take that away from him.”
The Golden Tide junior bounced back with two impressive wins, decking General McLane’s Clay Kuntz at 2:24 and then shutting out Marion Center’s Matt Himes 5-0 in the consy finals.
Matt Gasper (132) and Jake McCracken (152) each had a win and placed fourth and sixth, respectively.
Shorthanded with only eight wrestlers competing, Curwensville wound up last with 83 points in the eight-team tourney.
“It still was a good first tournament for us,” Swatsworth said. “All those teams were pretty good, and we got to see where we’re at and what we need to work on.”
Philipsburg-Osceola, coached by former Clearfield Area High School state champ and Penn State wrestler Brad Pataky, claimed the championship with 210 points as four Mounties earned titles, three were runners-up and three more won third-place matches.
Swatsworth expects to have at least two more weights filled when the Golden Tide welcomes Redbank Valley to Patton Hall for their dual meet opener Wednesday.
