Clearfield United Way and FamilyWize Offer Health Tips

It’s important to protect yourself and your family from the flu.

The flu can be especially serious for children, seniors, pregnant women and people with ongoing medical issues, such as diabetes, asthma and heart or lung problems.

You can follow these simple tips from the Clearfield Area United Way and FamilyWize to protect the people you care about from the flu.

Get a flu shot today

The best way to prevent the flu is with a flu shot. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommend that everyone – six months and older – get the vaccine as soon as it’s available this fall.

Last flu season, FamilyWize saved members an average of 53 percent on the flu vaccine. Anyone can use the free FamilyWize Prescription Savings Card with or without insurance.

Keep germs at bay

If possible, you should avoid close contact with people who have the flu. If you’re sick, you should stay home, so you don’t spread the flu.

Also, you should wash your hands with soap and water frequently or use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer.

Cover your cough

If you’re sick, you should always cough or sneeze into a tissue. You should only use the tissue once and then quickly throw it away.

If you don’t have a tissue, you can use the crook of your elbow since you usually don’t touch people with that part of your body.

Don’t share

During flu season, it’s wise not to share drinks or food with others.

Make healthy choices

A healthy immune system can help protect you from the flu.  To boost your immune system, you should eat a balanced diet that includes fruits, vegetables, protein and whole grains.

You should also make sure to get regular exercise and that you sleep seven to nine hours a night.

If you need assistance obtaining the FamilyWize Prescription Discount Card, please call the Clearfield Area United Way at 814-765-6521. The CAUW is willing to mail your card to you.

You can download your card at clearfieldareaunitedway.org or www.familywize.org.
