CURWENSVILLE – Curwensville will return to high school football action on Saturday night after receiving a bye in the first round of the District 9 Class “A” playoffs last weekend.
The Golden Tide (8-2) will play Redbank Valley (6-4) in the semifinals at Mansell Stadium in DuBois at 6 pm. Curwensville is the one seed, while the Bulldogs are the number five seeded team.
The Tide – Bulldog game is the second of a doubleheader, as in the first game at 1 pm it will be number two Ridgway (7-3) up against Coudersport (6-4), the sixth seed.
In the first game of the regular season Ridgway defeated Coudersport 29-8.
In last Friday’s quarterfinal round games, Redbank Valley defeated Otto-Eldred 15-8 and Coudersport knocked off Clarion-Limestone 44-40.
Curwensville has faced Redbank Valley four times since 2006 and sports a 3-1 record against the Bulldogs.
In the District 9 “A” playoffs the Tide beat the Bulldogs in the semifinals 34-6 in 2006 and three years later, in 2009, it was Curwensville once again topping Redbank Valley, 30-8 in the first round.
The Bulldogs gained some revenge in 2013, defeating the Golden Tide 28-22 in the District 9 semifinals.
A regular season game between the two schools took place in 2015 with Curwensville taking down Redbank Valley 44-30.
Under Golden Tide head coach Andy Evanko, Curwensville has made the District 9 playoffs in 17 of the last 18 seasons, starting in 2000.
Curwensville has won three District 9 Championships during that time period, 2000, 2004, 2010 and finished second in 2001 and 2006.
