CLEARFIELD – Area motorcycle organizations are already getting into the holiday spirit.

At Thursday’s Clearfield Borough Council meeting, Mayor Jim Schell announced that Clearfield ABATE, The Clearfield Cycle Club, DuBois Legion Riders, Tri-County Harley Davidson Club and the Christian Motorcycle Association have donated $6,100 to purchase toys for the Salvation Army.

Schell said the riders held a “helmet drive,” where they posted members at various locations and collected donations in their motorcycle helmets.

Schell then said that the police department, along with the Clearfield County Area Agency on Aging, will be holding its third annual “Giving Tree” to collect donations for senior citizens.

In previous years, trees were placed at the Clearfield CVS and Clearfield Pharmacy with ornaments containing a list of gifts for the seniors.

Schell said the borough police work with the CCAAA and Mount Nittany Medical Center to collect the gifts and distribute them.

In addition to gifts, the “Giving Tree” campaign also collects monetary donations, which are used to purchase additional gifts, as well as to purchase heating fuel.

Additionally, Fire Chief George Proud said the fire department will be distributing candy at the former Third Ward Fire Hall from 6 p.m. – 8 p.m. Oct. 31.

Proud added that the annual “Santa Tour” has been tentatively scheduled to begin around 5 p.m. Dec. 16.

In other business, the council voted to approve:

  • A temporary road closure of Third Street from Market Street to North Second Street to East Locust Street from 12 p.m. – 1 p.m. Dec. 2 for the YMCA Christmas Parade.
  • Adding an over-sized Stop sign at the intersection of South Third Street and Ogden Avenue.
  • A partnership with the American Red Cross for the Home Fire Campaign with a tentative start date of April 28.
  • Holding Trick-or-Treat night from 6 p.m. – 8 p.m. Oct. 31.
  • Free parking for the Thanksgiving weekend, complements of CNB bank.
  • Awarding the bids for street materials to Bucktail Excavating for AS2 stone; Center Concrete for Class A and High Early materials; Highway for High Performance patch; HRI for cold patch; and Woodland Equipment for 2A stone.
  • Adding milling work on Welch Street to the street paving list in the amount of $9,100.
  • Selling the 1995 white Freightliner; 1983 GMC sewer truck; the ridged push camera; road saw; and large manhole castings to BJOE in the amount of $3,100.
  • The resignation of part-time police officer Kem Parada.
  • Re-leasing a photocopier for the police department.
