DUBOIS – The Student Council of DuBois Central Catholic High School has received approval for its 39th year of raising funds for the local United Way Campaign.
United Way Day 2017 is taking place Friday, Sept. 22. It is the concluding event of Spirit Week, which begins Monday, Sept. 18.
For over three decades, DCC’s annual Spirit Week has ended with a United Way Day, a tradition begun in 1978.
Raising funds for the local campaign has been an integral part of the event, says Student Council Advisor Kathleen Kunkle.
Student Council President Jessica Tomasko and Vice President Meghan Graeca have determined the week-long slate of events. Other students involved in the planning are Justin Miknis, Garrett Prosper, Brandon Walker, Kenny Starr, Jack Volpe, Emily Williams and Haley Pettenati.
Some of the 2017 theme days include celebrity/character day, pajama bottom day, dress code or better day and Disney.
Class themes for the yearly skits this year are based on types of TV shows: sixth grade – cartoons; seventh grade – fashion; eighth grade – talent shows; ninth grade – food shows; 10th grade – mystery/crime; 11th grade – reality shows; and 12th grade – talk shows. Faculty always manages to have an outstanding performance, as well.
According to Kunkle, the school’s normal dress code will be altered during the week thanks to Central’s administration that recognizes the importance of Spirit Week and accommodates the wishes of the students as much as possible.
All activities will be taking place on school grounds behind Central near the soccer fields. A picnic lunch will be part of the celebration, served by parents. Students will be providing the music.
Competitions have been organized by Student Council and will be staffed by DCC teachers.
Some of the events taking place include Powder Puff Football, featuring the junior girls versus the senior girls, flag football, softball, kickball, volleyball, Can Jam, soccer, basketball and a variety of less active events.
Central’s annual lip sync competition will be held in the auditorium Friday morning. According to tradition, each grade level performs a musical skit drawing from their class theme.
In addition, DuBois Central Catholic Elementary School will be supporting the local United Way Campaign with a jeans day on Friday, according to Headmaster Gretchen Caruso.
