DUBOIS — After the pitching duel against Moshannon Valley on Tuesday, the Golden Tide of Curwensville got some rest in order to prepare for its next game to close out the week. Â It meant one very difficult challenge as they made a trip to DuBois to take on the Cardinals of DuBois Central Catholic, a team that only recorded one loss to this point on the season.
It was clear from the opening get-go who the dominant team would be.
From top to bottom, the entire Cardinal line-up had their bats ready to nail any pitch that was approaching. Â The home team blasted 11 hits on the afternoon, four of which went for extra bases, and seven batters bringing in at least one RBI in a 10-0 rout that went five innings.
The Cardinals put Jack Frank on the mound to start the game, and he was brilliant. Â The senior standout pitched three innings, gave up no runs while striking out three. Â Add in the relief effort from Anthony Kness in his two innings of work, the Cardinals only allowed one hit on the afternoon, and zero walks in the near perfect effort.
Curwensville never had an answer for the opposition, beginning in the opening inning. Â Starting pitcher Noah Vongunden saw a two-base error start things off with Justin Miknis to put a runner on second, then a single by Brandon Walker put runners on the corners.
A throwing error on the next at-bat brought Miknis to the plate, then an RBI-single by Thomas Grecco brought in Walker, putting the first run on the board. Â Garrett Prosper then scored on a fielder’s choice. Â That’s when things really started going south, as Michael Misiewicz then pulled off a double to put runners on second and third with two outs. Â Tyler McIntosh kept the at-bats rolling, as he nailed the third double in the inning, bringing in another pair of runs.
Things finally came to a close in the scoring after Dom Torretti nailed an RBI-single to make the score 5-0 at the end of one inning.
The second inning was more of the same, as Austen Cogley walked then a pair of RBI-doubles to both Frank and Walker put the score at 7-0. Â At that point, the Curwensville coaching staff pulled Vongunden from the mound. Â He earned the loss, giving up all seven runs, with five earned.
Christian Bakaysa then came in for relief, and started off well getting the first out. Â Then, Prosper struck an RBI-single that brought Walker to the plate, and put the score at 8-0.
Frank then came out after the third inning, already seeming to have the win intact, and Kness then took over on the hill.
After a scoreless third inning, the game hit the 10-run rule one inning later.  After being relieved in the top of the inning, Frank was struck by a pitch from Bakaysa, then came home on another RBI-double by Prosper, the fourth double of the game and third that brought in at least one run.  Misiewicz then brought forth the final run on an RBI-single to plate Prosper.  Kness then went through the final three outs in the top of the fifth inning to close out the game, leaving the Cardinals still once-beaten on the season.
Curwensville (2-7) reaches the halfway point of the season this week, with three home games slated at the high school.  The home stretch begins on Monday against Kane, with first pitch set for 4:15 p.m.
