ALTOONA – Meteorologist Jim Burton will join K.C. Kantz, Colleen Nelson and meteorologist Christy Shields on weekdays on WTAJ News This Morning.
WTAJ will become the only local television station with two meteorologists in the morning. WTAJ will welcome Burton on-air April 17.
WTAJ-TV Vice President and General Manager Phil Dubrow says that, “Having the experience of Jim joining the team only makes us even stronger. Viewers rely on us for weather, and we are now going to provide them with even more detail.”
Burton is a graduate of Carnegie Mellon University and Mississippi State. He is a recognized voice and face to central Pennsylvania.
He was a radio personality at WKYE in Johnstown and meteorologist for WJAC-TV in Johnstown from 1998 – 2016.
“We are excited to bring a familiar face back to central Pennsylvania. For years, many people relied on Jim to deliver an accurate forecast and a few laughs in the morning. Jim enjoys participating in many community events, which is very important to WTAJ,” says News Director Chris Miller.
Weather has fascinated Burton since childhood and becoming a meteorologist was pretty much a foregone conclusion for him.
He says, “Broadcasting has afforded me the opportunity to visit diverse climates and conditions from the Arctic to the Tropics. I’ve climbed upon glaciers in Alaska and the Yukon and descended into the crater of Mount St. Helens.
“I’ve had the pleasure of community service, promoting and emceeing fundraisers and charity events. I’ve also served on the State Board of Directors for Special Olympics of Pennsylvania.”
Burton loves the great outdoors, running with his dogs, Dundee and Yukon and jumping on his Harley.
“When I finally decide to hang up the suit and tie for good, I plan on retiring in Alaska, but west central Pennsylvania and WTAJ is my home” says Burton.
WTAJ is owned by Nexstar Broadcasting Group Inc. Nexstar owns, operates, programs or provides sales and other services to 171 television stations and their related low power and digital multicast signals reaching 100 markets or approximately 38.9 percent of all U.S. television households.
