SLIPPERY ROCK — Freshman pitcher Rachel Hoffman (Clearfield) notched her second win for Pitt-Johnstown in a 9-8 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference West Division squeaker over Slippery Rock at the SRU Softball Complex Tuesday, March 21.
She went the distance for the fourth time in five starts while allowing 12 hits and five walks.
After the Mountain Cats went up 9-6 in the fifth inning, The Rock threatened in their last three at-bats, but Hoffman escaped with minimal damage, stranding five runners. The game ended with the Mountain Cats completing a double play by throwing out the tying run at the plate.
Hoffman singled, walked and scored her first two runs for the Mountain Cats, who lost the opener 8-1.
Pitt-Johnstown holds down third place in the PSAC-West at 3-1 and is 3-9 overall.
Hoffman (2-3) tops the staff in complete games and earned run average (4.52) and is tied for the team lead in starts as well as appearances with six.
She has logged 31 innings with 16 strikeouts, 14 walks and two hit batsmen.
In 12 official at-bats, she has two hits, one a triple.

WINCHESTER, Va. — Freshman shortstop Megan Vanderburgh (Clearfield) had a pair of singles and scored three runs for Shenandoah (Va.) in three double-headers last week.
The Hornets (5-15) had only one win, 2-1 over Frostburg (W.Va.) Wednesday in non-league action, and dropped twinbills to Guilford (N.C.) 8-3 and 16-3 and No. 13-ranked Virginia Wesleyan 9-0 and 11-1 for a 1-7 record in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference.
Vanderburgh is 11-for-60 with one double and one run batted in.

BASEBALL
JOHNSTOWN — A three-run home run was the highlight of a four-hit day by Clarion senior second baseman/designated hitter Derek Danver (Clearfield) against Pitt-Johnstown in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference West Division doubleheader at Point Stadium Sunday afternoon.
He also singled in the first-game, an 11-4 loss, and had a pair of singles as the Golden Eagles, the home team because their field is unplayable, salvaged a split with a 2-1 victory.
On Wednesday at Consol Energy Field near Washington, Danver scored his first run of the season and drove in another with a sacrifice fly in Clarion’s nine-inning, 15-12 nightcap win over California.
Clarion (3-12, 1-7 PSAC-West) fell 7-2 in the opener of the non-league twinbill.
Danver was 4-for-10 in the four games to hike his average to a team-high .341.
He is 14-for-41 with seven runs batted in. He’s also received six walks and been hit by a pitch four times.

ALTOONA — Freshman second baseman Jarrett Fulmer (Clearfield) had one hit in three games for Penn State Altoona last week.
The Lions (6-12) opened their Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference schedule with 4-2 and 8-2 losses to La Roche at Pittsburgh Wednesday and a split against Medaille (N.Y.) at Mansion Park Sunday, winning 3-0 before falling 2-12.
In 15 games, including 13 starts, Fulmer has nine hits for a .231 average. He has two doubles with three runs driven in and two runs scored.
In the field, Fulmer has been involved in a team-high nine double plays.
