CHS Class of 1975 to Host Remember When … Dance
CLEARFIELD – The Clearfield High School (CHS) Class of 1975 will sponsor the “Remember When …” Dance from 7:30 p.m. – 11 p.m. May 31 in order to raise funds for its scholarship fund.
The dance will be held at the Clearfield Middle School. It is being held in conjunction with the open house for the Clearfield Middle School, which is closing at the end of the 2013-14 school year.
The open house is from 4 p.m. – 7 p.m., and a closing ceremony will be held at its conclusion. The “Show & Shine” Car Show will be held in the school’s oval from 4 p.m. – 7 p.m.
New 511PA Mobile Application Puts Traveler Information in Drivers’ Hands
HARRISBURG – People traveling through Pennsylvania can now get better traffic information before and during a trip with PennDOT’s new, free 511PA mobile application.
The application, available for iPhone and Android devices, provides hands-free and eyes-free travel alerts for the nearly 40,000 miles of road that PennDOT maintains, the Pennsylvania Turnpike and select New Jersey and West Virginia roadways. Users can also check the application before they travel to view traffic speeds, cameras and travel alerts.
Resident Confronts Sandy Twp. over Pentz Run Clean-up
DUBOIS – On Monday night, resident Pamela August discussed her clean-up effort along Pentz Run, as well as pressured the Sandy Township Supervisors to increase their own clean-up efforts.
On May 2, four individuals participated in the clean-up, including August and one 15-year-old who each worked seven hours. Two others, she said, put in 1.5 hours each for a total of 17 man hours toward the clean-up of Pentz Run.
3 Charged for 2010 Burglaries at Humane Society
WASHINGTON TOWNSHIP – Charges have been filed against three people accused of 2010 burglaries at the Gateway Humane Society, located on Airport Road, in Washington Township.
According to the state police at DuBois, Jerry Lee Spicher, 30, of Clearfield; Elizabeth Kit Golding, 25, of Morrisdale; and Leonard Eugene Pierce, 23, of Reynoldsville have been charged in the case. A warrant, state police said, was issued for Spicher, who turned himself in; his bail was set at $45,000 straight.
Fair Queen to Host Royal 5K, Car & Bike Show
CLEARFIELD – Clearfield County Fair Queen Taylor Goodman will host the third annual Queen’s For a Cause Royal 5K Run/Walk and a Car & Bike Show.
The event will be held June 8 at the Clearfield County Fairgrounds. Proceeds will benefit the Children’s Miracle Network and local causes.
Eisman Earns Walker Award for Leadership, Citizenship
DUBOIS – A senior majoring in business at Penn State DuBois, Jordan Eisman of Brockway is the recipient of the 2014 Eric A. and Josephine S. Walker Award.
Across all of Penn State’s University College campus locations, the Walker Award is considered one of the most prestigious honors. Eisman was recognized recently at both the Delta Mu Sigma Honors Convocation, as well as the Student Government Association banquet.
Kesner: PH in Process of Completing $10M Financing
CLEARFIELD – Penn Highlands Healthcare has initiated the process of completing a $10 million financing, reported Solicitor Kim Kesner at yesterday’s Clearfield County Commissioners’ meeting.
Penn Highlands Healthcare consists of campuses in Clearfield, DuBois, St. Marys and Brookville. A portion, Kesner explained, is for refinancing and another portion is to generate revenue for new construction.
LT Supers Accept PennDOT’s Corridor I-80/Route 322 Upgrades
CLEARFIELD – Lawrence Township Supervisor Ed Brown presented a proposal at last night’s meeting from PennDOT for funding to improve intersections at Interstate 80 and Route 322 for anticipated traffic volume increases.
Brown explained PennDOT is providing the five-year upgrade program in preparation for a proposed landfill project that is still pending approval from the state Department of Environmental Protection.
School Van Driver Accused of Showing Up at CAMS after Smoking Marijuana
CLEARFIELD – Charges were recently filed against a school van driver accused of arriving at the Clearfield Area Middle School after smoking marijuana, according to Magisterial District Judge Richard Ireland’s Office.
Geraldine Elaine Bratton, 44, of Morrisdale has been charged with DUI; endangering the welfare of children; recklessly endangering another person; careless driving; possession of marijuana; and use/possession of drug paraphernalia.
Man Accused of Stealing Vehicles Waives Hearings
CLEARFIELD – A man accused of stealing several vehicles in order to have transportation for alcohol and or drugs waived his right to preliminary hearings during Centralized Court on Wednesday at the Clearfield County Jail.
Corey Tyler Swatsworth, 36, of Curwensville appeared for six, different cases. In one case, he’s been charged with two counts each of theft by unlawful taking, receiving stolen property and unauthorized use of motor/other vehicles.
Causer, Rapp, Gabler to Introduce Measure Supporting PA’s Conventional Oil, Gas Industries
HARRISBURG – Working to ensure the survival of the state’s conventional oil and gas industries, Reps. Martin Causer (R-Turtlepoint), Kathy Rapp (R-Warren) and Matt Gabler (R-Clearfield/Elk) will soon introduce legislation requiring separate regulations for conventional and unconventional drilling operations.
County Judicial Sale Slated for June 18
CLEARFIELD – At Tuesday’s workshop meeting, the Clearfield County Commissioners announced that the county’s judicial sale of approximately 27 real estate properties will be held on June 18.
Commissioner John A. Sobel, chair, noted the county has received a lot of input from community members, including a local borough council member and a school board member. These people, he said, have expressed interest in the opportunity to purchase properties not sold at a tax claim upset sale.
Mineral Springs Girl Selected as 2014 Miracle Kid
Ten-year-old Chelsea Ippolito has a large collection of puppet animals. She has a couple of mice, an alligator, a hedgehog and several more.
The puppets — some of her most prized possessions — were gifts given to her from her parents during her many visits to Geisinger Janet Weis Children’s Hospital in Danville.
“I like my puppets,” she says, making a white mouse mouth words and move around in humanly fashion.
Clearfield Borough Hears Preliminary Plans for Stinky Run
CLEARFIELD – Clearfield Borough Engineer Todd Banks of Stiffler, McGraw and Associates Inc. reported last night to council on preliminary plans for major drainage repairs for Stinky Run.
The small stream drains under Woodland Road near 11th Street. It’s been creating road damage and hazardous ice conditions in winter.
Banks said plans and budget will be finalized in the next few weeks for an enclosed piping system that will cross under Woodland Road, extend along Evans Street, under SR 322 and the railroad tracks to drain into the river. He explained the system will include two 60-inch pipes with a cement box under the railroad.
Elk License Auction Bill Passes State House
HARRISBURG – House Bill 2169, legislation authored by State Rep. Matt Gabler (R-Clearfield/Elk) that reauthorizes the Special Elk License Auction program and grants an additional tag for auction or raffle by the Keystone Elk Country Alliance (KECA), is moving through the General Assembly following unanimous passage. The bill, which passed the House by a vote of 201-0, may now be considered by the state Senate.
