Martinsburg — Both of the Clearfield Area High School cross country teams won two out of three duals at a four-team meet hosted by Central on Monday. The girls team stands at 4-1 on the season after besting host Central 19-44 and Wiliamsburg 15-50, but losing to Central Mountain 35-20. The boys upped their record to 3-2 after beating Central 22-39 and Williamsburg 20-43. The boys also lost to Central Mountain, but by a 43-20 count.
Once again the top overall finishers from Clearfield were Claire Mikesell and Alec Freeman. Each finished second in their respective races; Mikesell with a time of 20:52 and Freeman with a time of 18:52.
Bison Head Coach John Jacob was pleased with his charges, noting, “We had some very good races today from everyone. The competition between the four teams was very close and everyone’s times improved on the year. Claire Mikesell and Alec Freman recorded their best times trying to track down the competition from both schools. Claire was able to dip below the 21 minute barrier for the second time and Alec was able to drop below 18 min for the first time. The girls race against Central Mountain was closer than the 20 to 35 score. Seconds separated Kristi Fox, Emily Aveni, Nicki Chew, and Emily Hoover from scoring positions. The girls did a nice job getting the race close over the last mile but the Central Mountain runners were able to outsprint us to gain some key points. I think the girls learned alot about pacing and racing that will help the team later in the season.
The Central Mountain boys team was very strong, but provided everyone on the team with some good competition. By racing a better, team the boys were able to better some of their season best times. Josiah McClarren, Logan Gilbert, Jacob Ryan and Malav Patel were just off the tail end of the lead pack but were able to make up quite a bit of time over the last two miles; but fell just a little short at the end of the race. As we reach the midpoint of the season you can see the boys steadily improving. The best thing is that the whole team is learning from their mistakes and I believe their best times are yet to come.”
The next meet for both teams is a Mountain League dual at Hollidaysburg on Thursday.
