Inez M. (Haxel) Johnson, 95, of Houtzdale died Thursday, Jan. 17 at the Tyrone Hospital. Born May 9, 1917, she was the daughter of the late Percey and Anna (Broberg) Haxel.
Mrs. Johnson was a member of the Faith United Lutheran Church, Houtzdale. She was a member of Order of Eastern Star, Tyrone Chapter #288, and the Lady Aster Rebekah Lodge.
She was a 1935 graduate of the Houtzdale High School. For 20 years, she was a sales clerk at the former Houtzdale Five & Dime. She was also a homemaker.
On Nov. 21, 1938 in Houtzdale, she married Arthur Johnson, who preceded her in death in 1992.
Mrs. Johnson is survived by two sons, James A. Johnson and his wife, Mary Ann of Hillsborough, NJ and Paul A. Johnson and his wife, Brenda of Bellwood.
Surviving are eight grandchildren, Susan Toifel and her husband, Joel; Allen Johnson and his wife, Lisa; Patty Wendt and her husband, Corey; Charles Johnson and his wife, Pischayada; Christopher Johnson and his wife, Michele; David Johnson and his wife, Elizabeth; Paula Boorse and her husband, Mark; and Eric Johnson and his wife, Melissa.
Also surviving are 18 great-grandchildren and two brothers, Milton Haxel of Santee, CA and Karl Haxel and his wife, Vi of Levittown.
Mrs. Johnson was preceded in death by her parents and husband; two sisters, Lois Harker and Ernestine Love; one brother, William Haxel; and a great-granddaughter, Sarah Johnson.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at the Birger A. Freeberg Funeral Home Inc., Houtzdale, with the Rev. Jonathan Schnibben officiating. Burial will be at the IOOF Cemetery, Brisbin.
The family will receive friends from 3 p.m. – 7 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
