DUBOIS – On Dec. 13, a group of nine students and three instructors from DuBois Business College (DBC) attended the Microsoft Event, “The New Era of Work.” This event occurred at the William Penn Omni Hotel in Pittsburgh.
Many vendors were present at this event with products to support Windows 8, including Microsoft, Toshiba, Veeam, CDW, Intel and Norton. Many industry people from the tri-state area attended this event as well. Darren Kite, one of the DBC instructor attendees, said many people were shocked that so many were in attendance from DBC.
The event covered several important releases by Microsoft, namely Windows 8 in the morning session and Windows Server 2012 and Azure in the afternoon. Students and faculty in attendance alike received information about the new operating systems and the Azure Cloud Computing Model in use by Microsoft to provide a place for users to store data. Attendees took part in a lab affording them the experience of installing Windows Server 2012 on their machines.
Stephen Wolfe, chief technical officer for DBC, said that the keynote presentation covered the importance of the shift in the Information Technology world towards a Bring Your Own Tablet/Bring Your Own Device (BYOT/BYOD) concept, where employees are expected to work from anywhere at any time.
Wolfe added, “We are currently in the middle of the single most important change of the IT industry since the commercialization of the Internet back in 1994. The current changes are going to create lasting changes to jobs in our industry and make hardware maintenance a lost art reserved only for the few people who wish to specialize.”
The DBC provides opportunities such as this for students to gain valuable insight and support to compete for the technology-based careers existing in the DuBois and surrounding area.
The DBC offers a couple of programs in the Information Technology field of study and they can be completed in 12 or 18-months. These opportunities, as well as the day-to-day training afforded our students; help them to “Touch the Future Faster.”™
