DUBOIS – A school in Clearfield County is making sure its students stay fit, but at the same time they are making sure they are having fun.
The Dubois Christian School began a mileage club back in November, and on Monday they reached a milestone.
Dee Horner, the gym teacher at the school said that she decided to start the program after seeing its positive impacts at a previous school she had worked at.
Horner said that the initial goal was for the kids to run or walk 2,500 miles by the end of the school year.
Monday afternoon, the 57 kids from K-6 who are a part of the mileage club successfully completed the schools 5,000th mile.
“It’s a big boost for them as an individual. Â They compete amongst themselves, not as a team,” said Horner.
So far 21 of the 57 kids have individually completed a minimum of 100 miles.
Horner said that each lap around the soccer field is 1/4 mile. Â However, one lap around the field is nothing to some kids.
“In November I hit 100 miles. So, I just kept running until now, and now I am about to hit 200 miles,” said third-grade student Derek Butterworth.
“I’m very proud of my kids. It’s a big encouragement tool. Â It gives me an opportunity to keep track of everyone individually,” said Horner.
School officials said their next goal is to reach 10,000 miles by the end of the school year.
