CLEARFIELD — The Clearfield boy’s and girl’s cross country teams hosted Mountain League teams Bald Eagle Area and Philipsburg-Osceola on Tuesday afternoon.
The boy’s team picked up their first win of the season, 15-50 over BEA, while the girls picked up a sweep to run their record to 5-3 on the year.
Bison head coach John Jacob was happy with the day’s results, despite the poor running conditions, “For both the girls and boys we had some strong performances on a very wet course. The footing was very bad due to the rain, but the girls and boys were able to come away with a victory. Juliana Mellgard was the top finisher for the Lady Bison. Mellgard ran a smart race, despite the conditions, to keep us in contention for the win against P-O. While Kristi Fox and Rachel Thompson worked together to come away with two very important spots in the team standing. These two girls have been an integral part of our five victories this year and continue to develop as runners. While our next spots also continue to improve with Emily Aveni, Kaylee Mulhollan, Coleen Mulhollan, Courtney Smith, Morgen Turner, Sarah Lash and Leann Cowder making huge improvements. The boys were not to be outdone picking up their first victory of the season. Jon Sponsler was again our top finisher. He has been running some very smart races lately and is ready for some break through performances in our upcoming meets. Vince Kovach was right on his heals and looked strong throughout the whole race. Both Vince and Kenton Clime have had some strong practices lately and are also starting to perform like veteran runners. Finally Jacob Ryan and Matt McKenzie have been performing well in their first year running. The boys have been experiencing some ups and downs but their overall race tactics are developing which will help them as the season goes on.”
