DUBOIS – The Distinguished Service Award was given posthumously to Dr. Albert Varacallo Jr. The award was given by the DuBois Area Jaycees at the Greater DuBois Chamber of Commerce’s Business Bash on Saturday night.
The award was presented to Varacallo’s wife, Luanne Varacallo, by Nicholas Suplizio, President of the DuBois Jaycees. Criteria for this award were stated by Suplizio: success in the person’s field, community involvement and service to the church.
Varacallo was born in 1957. Graduating high school 1975, he continued his education up to 2005. He graduated in 1979 from the Washington and Jefferson College with a degree in Psychology and Biology. From the Pennsylvania State University he received his Doctor of Medicine in 1983. Specifically the College of Medicine in Hershey, Pa. In 2005 he received his Masters Degree in Master of Medical Management from Tulane University.
Varacallo was the Medical Director at Christ the King Manor in DuBois since 1996. He was also named Preceptor of the Year in 1998. He was also appointed the Clinical Director of AHEC in 2008. Varacallo served as a volunteer physician at the Free Medical Clinic in DuBois. He started an affiliation with the DuBois Regional Medical Center in 1986. He eventually rose to be the Chief of the Department of Medicine from 1991-1993, the Vice President from 2004-2006, and ended a term as President of the Medical Staff in June 0f 2010. Varacallo also practiced family medicine at the Reynoldsville Medican Center since 1986. This is to name some of his activities in the field.
The late Varacallo was a Eucharistic Minister at the St. Mary’s Church in Reynoldsville till 2009. He was a member of the St. Michael the Archangel Roman Catholic Church. Varacallo was also on the Board of Directors for the DuBois Area Catholic Schools.
“This man’s simple passion has touched many in this community,” said Suplizio.
Suplizio presented the award to Luanne who was joined by her and Albert Varacallo’s six children and his mother.
“We would like to say thank you to the Jaycees,” Luanne.
“We are honored you chose Al as the recipient of the distinguished service award. Thank you and god bless,” said Luanne.
