WOMEN’S SOCCER
LOCK HAVEN – Jenny Williams of Clearfield had the game-winning goal as Lock Haven (4-7-1) blanked Mansfield 2-0 in Hubert Jack Stadium Saturday to halt a seven-game winless streak.
The senior midfielder dribbled in for a 10-yard shot inside the far post into the side net with just 2:03 gone in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference game.
She also started in Wednesday’s 3-0 setback at No. 22 Kutztown.
Williams is tied for third with three goals and is fourth with six points for the Lady Eagles, now 2-7-1 in the PSAC.
She has played in all 12 games, eight as a starter, and half of her eight shots have been on goal.

NEW WILMINGTON – Senior forward Danielle Struble of Curwensville scored for Westminster (6-6-1) early in Saturday’s non-conference game against SUNY-Geneso Saturday, but the visitors got even in the final minute of the first half and then escaped Harold Burry Stadium with a 2-1 win on a goal with less than two minutes remaining in the second overtime period.
Struble booted her sixth goal of the season at the 15:13 mark after handling a pass from Kellie Michanowicz.
The Lady Titans also lost 5-0 at Grove City and routed Chatham 8-0 at Pittsburgh in Presidents’ Athletic Conference games last week. They are tied for third place at 2-1.
Struble had eight shots in the three games, and six were on goal.
She leads Westminster in shots with 57 and is second in points with 14.

SLIPPERY ROCK – Senior forward Juliana Howell of Clearfield saw action Saturday as Slippery Rock (7-3-2) battled Kutztown, ranked No. 22 in NCAA Division II, to a 1-1 stalemate at Thompson Stadium Saturday.
She started for the fourth time this season in Wednesday’s 4-0 shutout at Mansfield.
The four points for the win and tie boosted The Rock into fifth place in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference. The Green and White has a 5-3-2 conference record for 17 points.
Howell has appeared in 10 games with 3 assists and six shots, three on goal.

DUBOIS – Because of a lack of players, the season has ended prematurely for sophomore midfielder Jilissa Keller of Grampian (Curwensville Area High School) and her Penn State DuBois teammates.
Last week, athletic coordinator Ken Nellis announced that the Lady Lions’ final seven games had to be cancelled because one player suffered a knee injury and two others had commitment issues that left the team with a nucleus of only seven players.
Keller registered one assist and one shot for the 2-5 Lady Lions.

FOOTBALL
OBERLIN, Ohio – Sophomore right cornerback David Kalgren of Curwensville had a career-high 12 tackles in a wild North Coast Athletic Conference battle between Oberlin and undefeated Case Western Reserve that wound up with the hosts on the short end of a 48-36 count in front of 1,539 fans at Savage Stadium Saturday afternoon.
Kalgren’s performance was highlighted by 11 solo stops and one pass defended.
He also returned two kickoffs for 46 yards and fair caught two punts for the Yeoman, who fell to 1-2 in the conference and 2-3 overall.
Kalgren leads Oberlin’s defense with 40 tackles, including 37 solo stops, and four passes broken up. He has two interceptions.
In the conference, Kalgren’s 8.0 average for tackles is No. 1 among defensive backs and tied for seventh overall. He is tied for fourth in interceptions and tied for second in the stat that combines interceptions with passes defended.
Kalgren has returned seven kickoffs for a 19.7 average and four punts for an 8.0 average.

LOCK HAVEN – Former Curwensville Area High School teammates Nick Sipes and Jesse Hoover were on opposite sidelines Saturday night when Clarion invaded Hubert Jack Stadium and handed Lock Haven its 26th consecutive defeat, 49-6, in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division action Saturday night.
Sipes, a senior strong safety for Clarion, had a season-low two tackles while Hoover, a redshirt freshman wide receiver for Lock Haven, did not have a pass reception for only the second time this season.
The Golden Eagles soared to a 42-0 halftime lead in front of 1,092 fans.
Sipes is the leading tackler for Clarion with 26 solo stops and 31 assists, his 9.5 average third-best in the PSAC. He has registered eight tackles for losses of 16 yards and forced one fumble.
Hoover is tied for fourth with 10 receptions and second in receiving yards with 195 for the Bald Eagles. He has the longest reception, 61 yards, and has scored one touchdown.

NEW BRITAIN, Conn. – Redshirt freshman fullback Nick Redden of Clearfield played in his third game for Duquesne (3-3) Saturday as Central Connecticut State made it a long trip home for the Dukes by holding on for a 31-29 Northeast Conference win with 3,957 looking on at Arute Field.
Duquesne scored two touchdowns in the final 2:07, the second on a fourth-down pass, before having a PAT pass that would have sent the game to overtime negated because the officials ruled the receiver had stepped out of the end zone before making the catch.
Duquesne is 1-2 in the conference.

GROVE CITY – Senior wingback Tyler Kirkwood of Frenchville (Clearfield Area H.S.) came off the bench for the first time this season Saturday for Grove City (2-3) in a 31-9 Presidents’ Athletic Conference loss to Thomas More (Ky.) in front of 4,500 fans at R.E. Thorn Field.
The Wolverines led 9-7 early in the second quarter before tumbling to 1-2 in the PAC.

READING – Sophomore wide receiver Jarrin Campman of Clearfield saw action in a reserve role as once-beaten Lycoming rolled past host Albright 50-0 for its fourth win in a row Saturday.
A crowd of 3,642 at Gene Shirk Stadium saw the Warriors spoil Homecoming for the Lions by bolting to a 28-0 lead after one quarter of the Middle Atlantic Conference game.
Former Bellwood-Antis standout Josh Klinefelter became Lycoming’s all-time leading rusher, rambling for 147 yards and two touchdowns to pad his career total to 3,309 yards.

NOTRE DAME, Ind. – Redshirt junior quarterback Andrew Janocko of Clearfield was the holder for one field goal and two extra points kicked by Dan Hutchins in Pitt’s 23-17 non-conference loss to Notre Dame in front of a Notre Dame Stadium crowd of 80,795 Saturday afternoon.
Hutchins nailed a 26-yarder midway through the first quarter for the first points of the nationally-televised game but was wide right on a 27-yarder early in the second period.
On the final play of the first half, Janocko was charged with a four-yard loss when the ball slipped out of his grasp on a 26-yard field goal try and the Fighting Irish recovered.

MEN’S SOCCER
WAYNESBURG – In his first non-starting appearance of the season, senior midfielder John Lhota of Clearfield earned an assist as Washington & Jefferson (7-2-2) expanded its Presidents’ Athletic Conference lead with a 3-1 victory over Waynesburg Saturday.
His pass led to Thad Piscatelli’s goal that gave the Presidents a 3-0 lead in the 28th minute.
W & J, which slipped past visiting Bethany (W.Va.) 2-1 Wednesday night to move into the top spot, is off to a 3-0 start in the PAC, good for nine points.
Lhota has one goal and two assists. Eleven of his 16 shots have been on goal.

NEW WILMINGTON – Senior midfielder Alan Baldwin of Olanta (Clearfield Area H.S.) was credited with his third shot of the season in Westminster’s 4-1 Presidents’ Athletic Conference loss at Grove City on Oct. 5.
Baldwin has played in 10 games for the 2-7-2 Titans, who are 1-1 in the PAC.

ALTOONA – Penn State Altoona (7-7) freshman midfielder Kurtis Graham of Clearfield started in a 6-0 win over Mount Aloysius at Cresson Oct. 5 and subbed in a 3-0 loss to Medaille at Buffalo, N.Y., Saturday night.
The Lions sit atop the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference with 12 points for their 4-1 record.
Graham has two assists and nine shots, five on goal, in 13 games. He has started four times.

WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL
UNIONTOWN – Freshmen starters Lindsay Barrett and Stephanie Neeper of Curwensville and sophomore reserve Sophia Reed of Clearfield are members of the Penn State DuBois team that maintained its No. 20 ranking in the mid-week United States Collegiate Athletic Association Coaches Poll despite losing 3-0 to No. 15 Penn State Fayette in the Fayette Community Center Main Arena on Oct. 5.
With second place in the Pennsylvania State University Athletic Conference on the line, the hosts bested the Lady Lions 25-15, 25-11, 25-21 to avenge a five-game defeat on Sept. 26.
Penn State DuBois fell to 10-3 and now is tied for third place with No. 14 Penn College and Penn State Beaver behind No. 12 Mont Alto at 12-0 and Penn State Fayette at 12-2.
