CLEARFIELD – Clearfield County will continue with a crime victims’ notification service after it was announced the state will not fund it.
The PA SAVIN system was implemented by Clearfield County in August. PA Savin is an automated victim notification system to help victims of crime track the status of an offender housed in the Clearfield County jail.
County Solicitor Kim Kesner said that initially the state said participating counties would not be required to spend money on the system.
“This was something the state presented as being fully funded,” said Commissioner Joan Robinson-McMillen. She said the state then came back and said it had no money to fund the service, putting it on the county’s shoulders.
McMillen said she feels the county benefits from the program, but that that residents need to know that the state continues to put the burden on local taxpayers.
The commissioners agreed to the contract to continue with PA SAVIN unanimously. It will cost the county $562.52 in 2009 and a yearly percentage increase.
