CLEARFIELD – In the future, the Lawrence Township Police Department may be taking part in a state effort to crack down on traffic offenses.
Lawrence Township Police Chief Jeff Fink said on Tuesday that he spoke with PennDOT recently and that the state agency would like the Lawrence Township Police Department to take part in the program.
Fink said that the program is designed to be utilized on highways with high accident ratings. The chief said that PennDOT would offer them gant money to pay for overtime wages involved in the patrolling of the roadways. Fink also added that the program has zero tolerance for traffic offenses.
“I think it’s a great program,” said Fink.
The chief added that the program will start in December. He said that PennDOT is currently working on the budget for the program, so he is unsure at this point of the amount of grant money that will be available to the township.
Bill Lawhead, chairman supervisor, agreed with Fink’s assessment of the progarm, calling it great.
“Pending legal review, great,” said Ed Brown, supervisor. “As long as there’s no long tentacles on it like some grant programs.”
The agreement will be turned over to Jim Naddeo, township solicitor, for review.
