CLEARFIELD – Generosity, giving back, and kindness are just a few of the words to best describe the efforts of four local 4-H youth members. On June 11th at a meeting of the Clearfield County 4-H Livestock Sale Committee, which was held at the Arrowhead restaurant of Clearfield, Clearfield County’s 2006-2007 Farm Safety & Health Quiz Bowl Team offered a portion of their winnings from their successful year to go towards the 2007 Clearfield County 4-H & FFA Livestock Sale Scholarship Fund.
The 2006-2007 Clearfield County 4-H Farm Safety & Health Quiz Bowl Team, consisted of 4-H members from the Harmony 4-H Club. In January of 2006, the team came home from the Pennsylvania Farm Show with third place. Team members included Nick Bakaysa of Madera, J.Delwyn Fry of Westover, Megan Junod of Mahaffey, and Don Smeal of Irvona. Robert Fry of Westover served as the alternate.
In order for the Quiz Bowl Team to compete at the Pennsylvania Farm Show they first had to qualify at a semi-final round, which took place during the 2006 Ag Progress Days held in Rock Springs. Only the top four teams to place at Ag Progress Days were eligible to compete at the Pennsylvania Farm Show. The Farm Safety & Health Quiz Bowl is an exciting and educational program to motivate youth to increase their awareness and knowledge of agricultural safety and health. In addition to the title, the team received numerous other awards throughout the semi-final and final competition. Awards included certificates, monetary awards, and each team member received a fleece pull-over jacket. Regina Fry of Westover served as the team’s coach for this event and really worked hard at preparing the team for this competition.

Each scholarship recipient must meet all of the eligibility requirements, which included being enrolled in some form of post-secondary education and being an active Livestock Sale participant within 4 years of applying. 4-H and FFA members are eligible to receive the scholarship for a maximum of four years as long as they continue to meet the scholarship requirements. Former 4-H and FFA members are also eligible up to their fourth year after graduation. All scholarship applications were due to the Livestock Sale Committee on September 15th for judging.
“Thanks to the generosity of our 2006 Livestock Sale Buyers, as well as other local businesses that donated directly to the scholarship fund, we were able to award the scholarship to ten deserving recipients.” Davidson.
