STATE COLLEGE – New technology opens up new opportunities for people or organizations to connect.
Centre County State Rep. Scott Conklin held a campus security press conference at his office in State College on Thursday to show just how technology can be used to alert people in the case of emergencies or events.
“10 years ago we couldn’t have done it,” Conlkin said of the system.
Conklin said the demonstration was set up with Code Red, an organization that Penn State uses to send voice or text alerts to students or event-goers in the event of emergency or event. Conklin said that the Penn State implemented the system a few years ago and is the only university in the commonwealth to use such a system.
“It saves lives,” said Conklin.
He also added that some municipalities use similar systems. The system can pinpoint to affect all cell phones within a specified area, according to Conklin.
Like with Penn State, such a system could be used to alert citizens of municipalities of scheduled garbage changes, power outages, snow storms or tornadoes.
Conklin added that he would like to see more municipalities use such a system. He also added that such a system would be very inexpensive.
